Naira Marley Breaks Silence: Explosive Defense in Mohbad Case Rocks Nigeria!
British-Nigerian singer and founder of Marlian Records, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, has finally shared his detailed account regarding the controversial death of his former signee, Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad. Mohbad tragically passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, under circumstances that have since led to widespread public scrutiny and various investigations. Following months of silence and ongoing controversies, including a coroner's ruling and police investigations, Naira Marley released a comprehensive documentary on YouTube, presenting his side of the story and addressing numerous allegations.
In February, a Magistrate's Court in Yaba, Lagos, had acquitted Naira Marley, music promoter Samson Balogun (Sam Larry), Ibrahim Owodunni (Primeboy), and Mohbad's former manager, Babatunde Opere, of blame concerning the singer's death. However, a Coroner's Court sitting in Ikorodu later recommended the criminal prosecution of Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who administered an injection to Mohbad shortly before his demise. Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi concluded that the nurse acted with gross negligence by providing treatment without a doctor's prescription, deeming her actions "unlawful and professionally negligent," even though the court ruled out foul play or homicide in the case.
Naira Marley recounted the genesis of his relationship with Mohbad, stating that he announced Mohbad as a Marlian Music signee in December 2019, alongside Zinoleesky and others, believing Mohbad was destined for stardom. A significant point in his narrative was the discovery of Mohbad's drug use. On June 7, 2020, Naira Marley learned Mohbad was using a substance called "Ice," which he identified as "Crack." He claims he advised Mohbad about the dangers, who attributed his drug use to stress and promised to stop. Naira Marley emphasized he only signed them and could only offer advice, not force them.
Financial dealings and managerial choices also emerged as points of contention. Naira Marley detailed a dispute in November 2020 where Mohbad used an account under the name "Adesanya Justina Olajumoke," which he initially claimed was his, then his mother's, but was later linked to his girlfriend Wunmi's family. Naira Marley eventually refused to make payments into this account, leading Mohbad to use his own. Furthermore, Mohbad chose his own manager, Tunde, in July 2020. Naira Marley intervened in the payment structure, suggesting a 10% commission for Tunde instead of Mohbad's proposed 20-25%. This managerial relationship later soured, culminating in an altercation on October 4, 2022, when an intoxicated Mohbad confronted Tunde at the Marlian House studio, leading to a physical fight that Naira Marley claims he intervened to stop. Shortly after this incident, Mohbad posted accusations on Twitter (now X), alleging threats to his life from Marlian Records because he wanted to change managers, claims Naira Marley suspects were fabricated by someone else using Mohbad's phone, noting Mohbad knew Tunde was not his brother.
The infamous National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) raid on Marlian House on February 24, 2022, was another critical event. Naira Marley, who was in Sweden at the time, stated that Zinoleesky and Subomi were arrested, and Mohbad was also taken after a scuffle with officers. Mohbad subsequently went live on Instagram under duress, experiencing a panic attack, during which he accused Naira Marley and others, including his girlfriend Wunmi and Zinoleesky, stating, "If I die, everybody na Marlian Music, Naira Marley kill me." Despite this, Naira Marley stated Mohbad remained with Marlian Music, released new songs, and he personally paid for Mohbad's hospital bills and scans, trying to understand what happened.
After the NDLEA incident, Mohbad moved out of Marlian House into his own apartment but maintained contact. Naira Marley claimed he made efforts to help Mohbad, arranging health checks and paying for medications. He further alleged that Mohbad attempted suicide on March 27, 2022, while Naira Marley was in Puerto Rico. Upon his return, Naira Marley discussed Mohbad's online search for a deadly insecticide called "Sniper" and spoke with Mohbad's parents, suggesting Mohbad be taken away for his safety. Despite these struggles, Mohbad attended the Marlian Day celebration on May 30, performing with Naira Marley, indicating a period of reconciliation.
The eventual termination of Mohbad's contract occurred on October 7, 2022, when his lawyer sent a letter to Marlian Music requesting his departure and payment logs. Naira Marley claimed transparency, sending the logs, but also highlighted that Mohbad had withdrawn $72,000 from a DSP partner in December 2022, an amount Naira Marley claimed was not rightfully his, leading to a temporary hold on some of Mohbad's royalty payments. Naira Marley stated he did not pursue Mohbad for the money, letting him go despite his investment, and that he last saw Mohbad on October 4, 2022, the day of the fight with his manager.
Addressing the day of Mohbad's death, Naira Marley maintained he was in Amsterdam, visiting his children, and later in Montenegro with Zinoleesky, debunking any direct involvement. He expressed surprise at being immediately implicated, with old videos resurfacing, and criticized the police for detaining him for two months in Panti, Lagos, after he returned to Nigeria to clear his name. Naira Marley insisted he never sent anyone to bully Mohbad and believed Sam Larry's denial of involvement. In conclusion, Naira Marley affirmed that Mohbad's royalties remain untouched and Marlian Music has contacted his lawyer, ready to hand them over to whoever the family or court designates. Through this documentary, Naira Marley aims to present himself as a supportive figure wrongly accused, even as he levied new accusations against Mohbad's wife, Zinoleesky, and an unnamed friend for introducing him to hard drugs, ensuring the controversy surrounding Mohbad's death remains far from settled.
