Music Icon Dolly Parton Makes Historic Donation, Hospital Renamed In Her Honor

Dolly Parton's profound commitment to philanthropy, particularly concerning children's welfare, is set to create a lasting impact on healthcare in East Tennessee. Following the announcement in February that the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital would be renamed Dolly Parton’s Children’s Hospital, the institution's president and CEO, Matt Schaefer, elaborated on the transformative nature of the country music icon’s undisclosed donation.
Schaefer described the moment as 'a bit of a surreal moment' and 'truly humbling,' emphasizing Parton's personal dedication to the community and children. He noted that despite initial anxiety about meeting the celebrated figure, Parton’s 'incredibly disarming personality' immediately put him at ease. Schaefer highlighted the 'halo effect' of Parton's global stature and her renowned love for children, which he believes will be 'fantastic for the future of our mission.' He characterized her contribution as a 'generational and transformational commitment,' one that 'goes beyond our wildest expectations' and will serve as a 'lifeline for this mission for now and for years to come.'
Founded in 1937, the hospital has served the region's children for nearly nine decades. Schaefer explained that Parton's backing and her name associated with the facility will enable the addition of vital medical services and allow them to 'tell a broader story about the depth and breadth of services here.' This support will also accelerate planning for expanding services and rethinking their responsibilities to the patients and families who depend on them today and in the future.
Parton herself announced the name change and donation in an Instagram video in February, stating, 'I’ve always believed that every child deserves a fair chance to grow up healthy, hopeful and surrounded with love. That belief is what brought me together with the incredible folks at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.' She commended the hospital's compassionate and talented care, acknowledging that they view children 'not just as patients, but as precious lives. Each with a story, and a future.' Her excitement culminated in the reveal: 'East Tennessee Children’s Hospital is becoming … guess what? Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital. Yay!'
In conjunction with the new name, the hospital unveiled a refreshed logo. This reimagining of its previous drawing of two dancing children now includes movement lines to symbolize 'the joy and happiness we wish for all children.' A red butterfly, representing 'the hope and inspiration that Dolly Parton brings to our patients, families, doctors, nurses, team members and volunteers,' has also been incorporated. The updated color scheme features pink, a tribute to Dolly’s 'love of children everywhere,' teal for 'calm, clarity and renewal,' and an updated shade of blue, connecting to the original logo and signifying 'commitment and trust.'
Dolly Parton, a native of Sevierville, Tennessee, has consistently prioritized charitable endeavors focused on children. Her most celebrated initiative, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, has to date registered over 3.1 million children and distributed more than 314 million books. Although Parton had maintained a lower public profile recently, she provided a health update during a keynote address at her Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, last month. This marked her first public appearance since postponing her Las Vegas residency last year due to undisclosed medical issues. Parton shared, 'I’ve not been touring, as you know. I’ve had a few little health issues, and we’re taking good care of them. I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on.' She referred to the loss of her husband, Carl Dean, who passed away in March. She added, 'I just got myself kind of where I needed to build myself back up spiritually, emotionally, and physically. But, all is good. It didn’t slow me down.'
