Mötley Crüe Icon Vince Neil's Harrowing Stroke Battle Revealed

Mötley Crüe's iconic frontman, Vince Neil, recently opened up about a serious medical ordeal, clarifying that what was initially reported as a single stroke on Christmas night was, in fact, a series of debilitating strokes he has experienced over the years. This significant health challenge led to the postponement of the legendary metal band's Las Vegas residency at Sin City’s Dolby Live at Park MGM by a substantial seven months.
Speaking to SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk, Neil, 64, detailed his medical history, stating, "I've had four strokes throughout the years. Two of ’em I didn’t even know I had." He recounted a "mini stroke" where he briefly lost feeling in his hand, which resolved quickly. However, the most recent incident, which he described as "a big one," was far more severe. Doctors were able to confirm the previous strokes by observing "four scars in [his] brain" during medical examinations, a clear indication to neurologists of past cerebrovascular events. This revelation highlights that individuals can suffer smaller strokes without immediate awareness.

The "big one" occurred on Christmas night, with Neil waking up the following morning completely unable to move. He vividly described the terrifying experience: "My left leg wouldn’t work, and my left arm wouldn’t work. So I had to get help out of bed." His immediate challenge was regaining basic mobility, necessitating assistance even to get comfortable in bed. What followed was a demanding rehabilitation process; slowly, sensation returned to his limbs, but he had to embark on a journey to learn to walk again. His recovery progressed from relying on a wheelchair, then a walker, to a cane, before finally being able to walk independently. This arduous period spanned five months, marked by uncertainty and a grim prognosis from doctors who suggested he might not return to the stage.
Defying medical expectations, Neil's determination propelled his recovery. "I worked my butt off to get back in shape to go on stage," he affirmed, acknowledging the sadness of having to cancel the initial shows due to his condition. His perseverance ultimately proved fruitful, allowing him to return to performing. Neil also shared a poignant detail, noting that his father had passed away from a stroke in March 2021, adding another layer of personal significance to his own battle. Doctors identified the cause of his major stroke as a blood clot that originated in his leg and subsequently traveled to his brain, visible on x-rays shown by his neurologist.
To aid his ongoing recovery, Neil has committed to an intensive regimen of "lots of physical therapy," with a therapist visiting his home daily. This dedicated approach has enabled him to make a triumphant return to the stage. Mötley Crüe is now set to resume their Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live, with performances scheduled for Friday, September 26, and Saturday, September 27.

For context, a stroke, as defined by the Cleveland Clinic, occurs when a "blood clot or vessel prevents blood from getting to your brain," leading to brain cell damage. Globally, strokes are the second leading cause of death and the fifth most common in the United States. Common symptoms can include aphasia (difficulty or loss of speech), blurry or double vision, confusion, coma, dizziness or loss of coordination, memory loss, mood swings, and headaches. Neil's candid discussion serves as a powerful reminder of stroke awareness and the challenging path to recovery.
