Microsoft has unveiled a new suite of artificial intelligence-powered cybersecurity tools aimed at helping organisations defend against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats driven by AI.

The announcement introduces the company's first cybersecurity-focused AI model,MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, alongside Perception, an AI security platform built to automate vulnerability detection and incident response.

The new technologies were introduced during a Microsoft event in San Francisco, where the company outlined its strategy to use AI not only to improve productivity but also to strengthen cyber defences. The launch places Microsoft in direct competition with other technology firms developing AI-powered security solutions, including OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.

At the heart of the announcement is MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, an AI model designed to identify complex software vulnerabilities across large codebases. The model works with MDASH, Microsoft's internal framework for detecting and remediating software security flaws, allowing developers to identify potential weaknesses more quickly and generate recommended fixes.

Microsoft also introduced Perception, an agent-based cybersecurity platform that deploys specialised AI teams to automate different stages of cyber defence. The platform combines simulated attackers, defenders and remediation agents to help organisations discover vulnerabilities, prioritise threats and implement security improvements with minimal human intervention.

According to Mustafa Suleyman, Chief Executive of Microsoft AI, the company has achieved strong results in internal cybersecurity testing. He said the combination of MAI-Cyber-1-Flash with Microsoft's broader AI capabilities delivered leading performance on industry cyber defence benchmarks while reducing computing costs.

Microsoft says Perception is designed to help security teams respond to cyber threats at the same speed that attackers increasingly use AI. The platform's red team agents simulate sophisticated cyberattacks to expose weaknesses, blue team agents detect and investigate threats, while green team agents recommend or implement remediation measures.

The company believes these autonomous workflows could dramatically reduce the time required to investigate and resolve security incidents. Tasks that previously required hours of manual work by multiple cybersecurity specialists could now be completed in minutes, improving both response times and operational efficiency.

The announcement reflects a broader trend across the cybersecurity industry, where AI is becoming both a powerful defensive tool and a growing challenge.

While organisations are using AI to strengthen security operations, cybercriminals are also adopting the technology to create more convincing phishing campaigns, discover software vulnerabilities and automate attacks.

Microsoft said the new cybersecurity tools will enter preview on 3 November, allowing enterprise customers to begin testing the platform before wider availability.

The development is particularly relevant for Africa, where governments, financial institutions and businesses are rapidly digitising services while facing rising cyber risks. As countries including Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa expand investments in cloud computing, fintech and digital public services, AI-powered cybersecurity platforms could play an increasingly important role in protecting critical infrastructure, financial systems and sensitive data.
