Mass Sacking Scandal Rocks Dangote Refinery After Workers Join Union

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reportedly terminated the employment of all its Nigerian workers, a significant development that occurred less than 24 hours after 90 percent of them joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
According to a memo dated September 25, 2025, and signed by Femi Adekunle, the Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, the company justified its decision as part of a “total re-organisation” of the plant. The memo also cited reported cases of sabotage across various units of the refinery as a contributing factor to the mass dismissals.
The directive issued to affected staff members instructed them to promptly surrender all company property in their possession to their respective line managers and to obtain the necessary exit clearance. Furthermore, the finance department was tasked with computing benefits and entitlements for payment, in strict adherence to the terms of employment previously agreed upon.
In its communication, the refinery's management extended its gratitude to the dismissed workers for their services during their tenure with the company. This mass termination comes amid a prolonged trade dispute between Dangote refinery and PENGASSAN, centered on the contentious issue of worker unionization, as previously reported by DAILY POST.
