Marvel Series Breaks Records! Newest MCU Show Earns Highest Rotten Tomatoes Score in Four Years

Marvel Television's newest series, 'Wonder Man', has quietly debuted with an impressive critical reception, achieving a towering 96% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 24 reviews. This makes it the highest-rated live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) show since 'Ms. Marvel', which boasts a 98% score. 'Wonder Man' surpasses other notable live-action series such as 'WandaVision' and 'Hawkeye', both at 92%, and 'Loki', which sits at 87%.
These high scores are significant as only a select few live-action Marvel Studios series have managed to achieve scores in the 90s since the launch of Disney+ in 2019, contrasting sharply with more recent efforts like 'Secret Invasion' at 53% or 'Daredevil: Born Again' at 87%. While Marvel Animation has seen even higher critical acclaim with 'X-Men ’97' at a near-perfect 99%, 'Wonder Man' marks a genuine turning point for live-action MCU offerings.
While it is technically too early to declare a complete victory, as a few more reviews are needed for the series to earn Certified Fresh status, the early consensus strongly suggests that Marvel's strategic decision to radically scale back the narrative stakes has paid off. Co-created by Andrew Guest and Destin Daniel Cretton, 'Wonder Man' is intentionally low-key in its approach.
The series centers on Simon Williams, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, a struggling actor whose pursuit of a big break collides with the inconvenient reality of possessing superpowers in a world where powered individuals are banned from the acting profession.
Rather than hurtling towards multiversal catastrophes or grand cosmic threats, the show deliberately focuses on more grounded and relatable themes such as personal ambition, the complexities of friendship, and the inherent absurdity of the entertainment industry. A standout performance comes from Ben Kingsley, who delivers an Emmy-worthy turn as the fan-favorite character Trevor Slattery, further grounding the series in its unique comedic and dramatic tone.
Critics have lauded 'Wonder Man' for its refreshing take on the superhero genre. Collider’s review, for instance, praised the series as the MCU’s smartest and most refreshing TV entry since 'Loki', offering a much-needed antidote to the pervasive superhero fatigue. The show is also noted for being bursting with surprises, including a distinct episode that follows a completely separate character, which critics have refrained from spoiling.
Its broad appeal is highlighted by its ability to engage both hardcore MCU aficionados and those who have never watched a superhero movie, making it one of those rare experiences that resonates with a diverse audience. 'Wonder Man' is positioned as a truly phenomenal start for Marvel's ambitious 2026 slate, with all episodes set to debut on January 27 on Disney+.
