Mario Movie Tanks! 'Super Mario Galaxy' Suffers Franchise-Low Rotten Tomatoes Score

2026 is shaping up to be a big year for blockbuster movies. Following the hit success of Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, which topped the box office for two weekends and raked in over $300 million worldwide.
But audiences are now turning their attention to the next big release: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and excitement is already building to see who will claim the crown next!
Following the massive success of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ in 2023, which raked in over $1.3 billion on a $100 million budget, fans have been eagerly waiting for a sequel.
And tomorrow, their wait is finally over with the release of ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.’
Box office experts are already predicting a huge opening weekend, with numbers expected to surpass $300 million.
But while fans seem excited, critics are more divided, and the movie received a 44% ‘Rotten’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, lower than the original’s 59%.
Yet audiences are loving it, giving it a 95% ‘hot’ rating on Popcornmeter.
It looks like Mario is ready to take us on another wild adventure—this time, the fans are clearly on his side.
Ross Bonaime of Collider gave the film a solid 7/10, praising fresh faces like Yoshi (Donald Glover) and Rosalina (Brie Larson), though he felt the story was a bit thin.
Critics’ lukewarm reviews probably won’t hurt the box office much, after all, the first film wasn’t a critics’ darling either. What really counts is how audiences respond once the movie hits theaters.
Nintendo’s beloved plumber is back in action! ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ features Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Glen Powell.
It was announced on MAR10 Day 2024, this 98-minute, PG-rated adventure is directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Pierre Leduc, and Fabien Polack, with Matthew Fogel writing and Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto producing. Get ready for a galaxy-sized ride!
