Manchester United Managerial Meltdown: Rooney Slams Amorim Doubt, Carragher Demands Change

Manchester United finds itself in a period of intense scrutiny and disappointing performance, with head coach Ruben Amorim facing significant pressure amid a tough start to the season. The club's recent 3-1 defeat to Brentford has only intensified calls for change, leaving United in a lowly 14th place in the Premier League. Esteemed former players and pundits have voiced strong criticisms, painting a bleak picture of the club's current state.
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender, described Amorim's tenure at Old Trafford as a "disaster," suggesting it might be best for both parties to "just shake hands and move on." Appointed in November last year, Amorim has secured a mere 34 Premier League points from 33 games, failing to reverse the club's fortunes. Carragher highlighted that Amorim's favoured 3-4-3 system, while successful at Sporting CP, may not suit Manchester United's traditions, though he believes the blame lies with the club's hierarchy for bringing in a manager whose core philosophy is so entrenched. Despite struggles, the club backed Amorim with over £200 million in attacking talent and a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
Further reinforcing the sentiment of disillusionment, Manchester United's record goalscorer, Wayne Rooney, declared that the "soul has departed" from the club and expressed a loss of faith in Amorim's ability to turn things around. Rooney, who now attends matches "expecting" United to lose, believes the club is "broken" and that some current players "don't deserve to wear the shirt," emphasizing the need for a "new engine." He stated, "I am not seeing anything that gives me any confidence; there needs to be significant changes in my opinion. Manager, players—whatever it takes to get Manchester United back."
Amidst this turmoil, Tyrell Malacia, one of the five members of the so-called ‘bomb squad,’ is set to return to first team training after a lengthy 550-day absence due to a knee injury that required two surgeries. Malacia, Erik ten Hag’s first signing in July 2022, had been training separately but his reintegration into the senior squad was reportedly always planned. With a year left on his contract, United faces a significant decision regarding the left-back's future, especially given his limited playing time last season and the recent signing of Patrick Dorgu, who has yet to impress.
The mounting pressure on Amorim has led to speculation about potential managerial changes. While the United hierarchy reportedly still backs Amorim, the club is said to be monitoring other Premier League coaches such as Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, and Fabian Hurzeler. Michael Carrick, a United great who previously served as caretaker manager in late 2021, is also being considered as a potential interim option. Carrick, currently out of work after being sacked by Middlesbrough, maintains close ties to the club and has been tipped for a permanent managerial role in the future by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The situation at Manchester United remains volatile, with fans and pundits alike anticipating significant shifts to restore the club's former glory.
