Manchester City Secures Antoine Semenyo in Blockbuster £65m Deal

Manchester City have officially announced the signing of Ghana international Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth in a significant deal reportedly worth approximately £65 million. This transfer marks a record sale for the Cherries, as City activated Semenyo's release clause, which required action before Saturday. The financial terms include an initial payment of £62.5 million (or $84 million), disbursed across 24 monthly instalments, with additional bonuses and potential add-ons totalling around £1.5 million (or $2 million).
The 26-year-old winger has committed his future to Manchester City by signing a five-and-a-half year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031. He completed his medical examination on Thursday and will don the number 42 shirt, a number famously worn by club legend Yaya Toure during his eight successful years at the club.
Expressing his excitement, Semenyo stated, "I am so proud to have joined Manchester City. They have set the highest of standards and it's a club with world-class players, world-class facilities and one of the greatest managers ever in Pep [Guardiola]. I have so much scope for improvement, so to be at this club, at this stage of my career, is perfect for me. It's a real privilege to be here." He further added, "My best football is yet to come, I am sure of that. I watched City over the last decade under Pep Guardiola, and they have been the dominant team in the Premier League as well as achieving amazing things in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup. City are in a great position, still involved in four competitions. I really feel I can help them have a strong second half of the season."
Manchester City's Director of Football, Hugo Viana, highlighted the club's long-standing interest in Semenyo, confirming he had become their top priority in the transfer market after an impressive spell at Bournemouth. "We are constantly watching players all over the world. Antoine was the one we most wanted," Viana remarked. "He has shown he can perform in the Premier League. He is humble, hard-working, professional and totally focused on being a better footballer. He is ideal for us."
Pep Guardiola revealed that City fended off competition from "many clubs," including Premier League rivals Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Arsenal, to secure Semenyo's signature. "Many clubs wanted him and he decided to join us so all I can say is thanks to him," Guardiola commented. "We are very pleased. [For] a long time, we follow him. Everybody knows the qualities. He was extraordinary at Bournemouth and he can play on both sides, right and left. He can play as a striker as well with his pace. He knows the Premier League."
The London-born winger bid farewell to Bournemouth by scoring a stoppage-time winner in their recent 3-2 victory against Tottenham. This season, he has been a prolific force, netting 10 goals in 20 Premier League appearances for the Cherries. Having been registered in time for the weekend, Semenyo is eligible to make his Manchester City debut in the FA Cup third-round tie against League One side Exeter City on Saturday. He will also be available for the Carabao Cup semifinal first leg against Newcastle United at St James' Park on Tuesday, and could potentially make his Premier League debut against Manchester United next weekend.
In related transfer news, Manchester City have also been linked with a January move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi, who is out of contract in the summer. City currently face a shortage of centre-backs due to injuries to Josko Gvardiol, Rúben Dias, and John Stones. However, Guardiola refrained from commenting on whether Semenyo's arrival would be followed by another addition before the transfer deadline, stating, "I don't know, I cannot answer that question."
