Man Utd Crisis Deepens: Amorim Under Fire Amid Fan Fury & Rooney's Ultimatum

Manchester United has endured a dismal start to the new Premier League season, securing only one point from their opening two matches, leading to intense pressure on manager Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw at Fulham, a game where they went ahead via an own-goal before conceding an equalizer, and had previously lost their season opener to Arsenal. This winless run, despite a substantial £200 million summer investment in new attackers, has sparked widespread fan discontent, with many calling for Amorim's dismissal.
A significant point of contention among supporters is the treatment of England international Kobbie Mainoo. Despite the team's struggles in midfield, Mainoo has been left on the bench for both opening games, becoming a "fourth choice" midfielder in the eyes of many fans. This marginalization has led to speculation that the 20-year-old is considering a move away from Old Trafford if a suitable offer arises, although Amorim has insisted Mainoo must "fight for his position" with Bruno Fernandes and will get his chance.
Critics, including club legend Wayne Rooney, have voiced strong concerns. Rooney stated there are "no excuses now" for Amorim, demanding fast results and expressing worry that "hallmarks of their disastrous 2024/25 campaign are still there." He highlighted Amorim's record of just 28 points from 29 league matches since taking charge, and a Premier League win percentage of 24.7 percent, comparable to managers of relegation-threatened sides. Rooney, while acknowledging good recruitment, questioned Amorim's long-term suitability given the lack of clear progress and a settled team structure.
The tactical approach of Ruben Amorim has come under severe scrutiny. His preferred 3-4-2-1 (or 3-4-3) system, successful at Sporting Lisbon, is perceived as not working at Manchester United. Critics argue it relies on specific player profiles not available at Old Trafford, forcing creative players like Bruno Fernandes into deeper defensive midfield roles and wingers such as Amad Diallo into unnatural wing-back positions. There are calls for Amorim to show more tactical flexibility, adapt his approach, and potentially revert to a more traditional back-four setup to provide defensive stability and accommodate players like Mainoo.
Furthermore, the team's lack of goal-scoring despite a £200 million spend on the forward line is a major concern. United are yet to score a team goal this season, with their only goal coming from an own-goal. New £74 million signing Benjamin Sesko has been largely benched, and Rasmus Hojlund has been excluded from both games amid loan move talks. Instead, players like Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha have been deployed up front, often out of their primary positions, contributing to the goal drought.
The goalkeeping situation also presents a crisis. Amorim's decision to start Altay Bayindir over Andre Onana, even after Bayindir's mistake against Arsenal, indicates a lack of trust in Onana. The team appears vulnerable on corners with Bayindir in goal, with calls for a reliable presence between the sticks, potentially through a new signing before the transfer window closes. The midfield's lack of control, particularly in the second half of games, compounded by questionable substitutions, further exacerbates the team's problems.
Despite the mounting criticism, some within the club are defending Amorim. Young wing-back Patrick Dorgu believes the players are now gaining a better understanding of the manager's methods after a full pre-season. Dorgu emphasized the flexibility of the 3-4-3 formation, suggesting it can adapt to become a 4-3-3, and praised Amorim's positive management style. He also highlighted the positive impact of new signings and recently upgraded facilities at Carrington, encouraging the team to stick together and perform to get back into European competition.
As Manchester United faces crucial upcoming fixtures, including a Carabao Cup match against Grimsby Town, followed by Premier League clashes against Brentford, Manchester City, and Chelsea, the pressure on Ruben Amorim to deliver immediate and drastic improvements will only intensify. The debate over his tactics, player selections, and the team's overall direction continues to rage among fans and pundits alike.
