Malawi Erupts: Mutharika Sweeps Presidential Race as Official Results Confirm Landslide Victory

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has released national official results from 24 electoral councils counted so far, indicating a significant lead for Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Initial reports for these 24 councils show Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) with 990,872 votes (23.9%), Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) with 204,271 votes (4.9%), and Peter Mutharika (DPP) with a commanding 2,954,553 votes (71.2%). The grand total of valid votes from these three candidates stands at 4,149,696.
Further official results also reported by the MEC for the same 24 electoral councils indicate slightly different tallies: Lazarus Chakwera (MCP) garnered 722,575 votes, Dalitso Kabambe (UTM) received 146,664 votes, and Peter Mutharika (DPP) secured 2,022,879 votes.
According to Annabel Mtalimanja, Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission, results from all 229 constituencies have been successfully transmitted into the system. She confirmed that all councils have displayed their results on public notice boards, ensuring transparency and allowing citizens direct access to the information. Mtalimanja added that 35 councils have already delivered their results to the national tally centre, with only one council still outstanding. The Commission continues to receive official complaints and has urged citizens to submit them formally to MEC, rather than through social media posts or mobile voice notes.

In response to the election outcome, Fred M’membe, President of the Socialist Party of Zambia, extended warm congratulations to Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on his "resounding election victory." The party conveyed best wishes for his success as he assumes the high office of President of the Republic of Malawi, assuring him and the Malawian people of their friendship, brotherhood, and enduring solidarity. M'membe lauded Mutharika’s triumph as a testament to the strength, determination, and courage of the Malawian people, and to his own resilience in standing firm against what was described as poor, corrupt, and unempathetic leadership. The Socialist Party expressed confidence that under Mutharika's experienced leadership, opportunities for inclusive national dialogue will emerge, engaging all sectors of society, and wished him every success in his journey of service to his nation.
