Lupita Nyong'o Unleashes Fury on Elon Musk Over Controversial 'Odyssey' Role

Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has finally addressed the significant controversy ignited by her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation of the Greek epic, "The Odyssey." The announcement of Nyong’o, an Oscar-winning Black actress, in the role traditionally associated with a white, fair-skinned figure, sparked immediate and fierce debate across online platforms, particularly after the character was also noted to include Helen's sister, Clytemnestra, in the star-studded adaptation of Homer’s classic poem.

The core of the backlash revolved around the decision to cast a Black actress in a foundational work of European mythology, with critics arguing it constituted "race-swapping" and deviated from traditional depictions. Conservative commentators, such as Matt Walsh, voiced strong disapproval on X (formerly Twitter), accusing Nolan of making the casting choice to avoid criticism about racism within Hollywood and to sidestep progressive backlash.

The controversy gained further momentum when billionaire businessman Elon Musk weighed in on the discussion via X. Musk explicitly agreed with Walsh's sentiment, simply replying “true” to his post. He later expanded on his criticism, asserting that casting a Black woman in a major European mythological story was inappropriate. Musk posted, “I agree that she is beautiful, but casting a Black woman to play a White woman in a foundational work of European literature is no righter than casting a White man to play Shaka Zulu!” He further alleged that Nolan's casting decisions were politically motivated, aiming for awards season recognition and a play for Hollywood inclusion standards, rather than faithfulness to the original material.

Despite the widespread online criticism, Nyong’o has made it clear she has no intention of engaging in defensive online battles. In an exclusive interview with Elle Magazine, she stated, “I’m not spending my time thinking of a defence. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.” The actress emphasized that her approach to acting transcends physical appearance, focusing instead on understanding the emotional depth and essence of a character. “You can’t perform beauty,” Nyong’o explained, adding, “I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks?” She highlighted that "The Odyssey" is a widely interpreted mythological story, allowing for diverse creative approaches to its characters and narratives, and noting that the research into such a well-known text could be endless.

Nyong’o also staunchly defended Nolan’s broader creative vision, describing the project as a mythological adaptation rather than a strict historical recreation. She noted that the cast, which also includes stars like Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, was intentionally designed to reflect a more representative and globally diverse world. Nolan himself expressed that he was “absolutely desperate” to cast Nyong’o, praising her natural presence and ability to convey deep emotion beneath the character's poise. He firmly brushed off complaints regarding historical accuracy, reiterating his commitment to a modern, expansive interpretation, and stating that Lupita “makes it look effortless.”

This casting decision has fueled a broader debate: critics maintain that mythological and historical characters should adhere to traditional racial depictions, while supporters champion modern adaptations for allowing creative reinterpretation and fostering inclusive casting. Nyong’o succinctly encapsulated her personal resilience amidst the debate, stating, “I can’t spend my time thinking about all the people who still don’t love me.”

Shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, Nolan’s version of "The Odyssey" is slated for release on July 17, 2026, and is widely regarded as one of Hollywood's most anticipated upcoming releases, promising an epic narrative for modern times despite the ongoing controversy.
