Limp Bizkit's Emotional Return: Band Honors Late Bassist Sam Rivers on Stage

Limp Bizkit recently paid a touching tribute to their late co-founder and bassist Sam Rivers during their first concert following his passing in mid-October. Fronted by Fred Durst, the rap-rock band honored Rivers at Mexico City’s Estadio Fray Nano on Saturday, November 29. The tribute included a video displaying an image of Rivers with heartfelt messages: “Sam Rivers, our brother forever” and “Sam Rivers, we love you forever.” As the video ended, the band members embraced on stage, while the crowd chanted Rivers’ name in solidarity.
Earlier in the day, drummer John Otto shared a poignant reflection on his late friend and bandmate via Instagram. Otto called it a “first I never wanted to experience,” recalling their shared journey: “Some of my earliest memories were made with you. We grew up together. Laughed together. Realized our dreams together. And traveled the world together.” He described Rivers as “The godfather to my girls, my best friend – my brother” and vowed to honor his life in every performance, expressing gratitude to fans for their support and tributes.
Sam Rivers passed away on October 18 at 48. While the official cause of death was not immediately revealed, Rivers had been diagnosed with liver disease in 2011, linked to years of heavy drinking. He underwent a liver transplant in 2017 and rejoined Limp Bizkit in 2018 after a brief hiatus. During the Mexico City show, bassist Richie Buxton, also known as Kid Not, performed with the band, who is also known for his work with Ecca Vandal, the supporting act on Limp Bizkit’s upcoming South American tour. Rivers’ enduring legacy was felt throughout the performance.
Following Rivers’ death, Fred Durst shared his own emotional tribute, acknowledging the profound loss and admitting to shedding “gallons and gallons of tears.” He revered Rivers as a legend who “truly lived it.” The full band, including guitarist Wes Borland, DJ Lethal, and John Otto, issued a joint statement describing Rivers as “pure magic,” “the pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.” From their first note together, Rivers brought irreplaceable rhythm, presence, and heart, leaving a mark that fans and fellow musicians will remember forever.
