Lake Garda Inferno! Wildfire Forces Mass Evacuation of Tourists and Residents
A major wildfire has erupted in the Tignale mountains of Alto Garda, leading to the evacuation of 200 people from holiday homes and tourist residences on the western shore of Lake Garda. Strong winds and recent drought conditions are significantly impeding firefighters' efforts to control the blaze, though no injuries have been reported yet as extensive resources, including Canadair aircraft, are deployed.
A significant wildfire ignited on Friday evening in Alto Garda, specifically within the Tignale mountains situated on the western shore of Lake Garda. The immediate response involved a coordinated effort from various emergency services, including firefighters, civil protection teams, forest Carabinieri, and volunteer fire crews, all working diligently to secure the affected area.
The operation is being meticulously coordinated by Daniele Bonassi, the mayor of Tignale, who characterized the unfolding scenes as "terrifying" due to the intensity and scale of the blaze. A primary challenge in bringing the fire under control has been persistent strong winds, gusting up to 40 kilometres an hour, which are rapidly altering the direction of the flames and making containment extremely difficult.
Adding to the severity of the situation is the impact of a recent drought in the region. Weeks of dry weather have left the local vegetation desiccated and highly susceptible to fire, creating ideal conditions for the rapid spread of the blaze. In an escalation of efforts, two Canadair water-bombing aircraft were deployed the following morning to assist in dousing the flames from above.
Authorities have issued an order for the evacuation of 200 individuals from the fire-threatened zone. Overnight, guests were moved out of various holiday homes and the "La Forca" residence, a popular accommodation for numerous Italian and foreign tourists. Rescuers are conducting house-to-house checks, a necessary measure as it is often unclear which properties are currently occupied by residents or visitors. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported thus far. The cause of the wildfire remains undetermined, and at present, all rescue efforts are concentrated on containing the destructive flames.
