Lagos Inferno: Afriland Towers and Mandilas Market Fires Claim Lives, Spark Safety Outcry

A devastating fire incident struck Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, September 16, resulting in significant loss of life and property. The six-storey commercial building, managed by Afriland Properties Plc, saw the blaze originate in its inverter room before smoke rapidly spread to multiple floors.
Tragically, the incident claimed the lives of ten individuals. United Capital Plc confirmed the passing of six of its staff members, describing them as integral to their company and family, and pledging support to the bereaved families. Separately, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) announced that four of its employees also lost their lives in the inferno. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reported successfully rescuing nine people, with five resuscitated and ongoing efforts to revive four others.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed his profound sympathy and commiserated with the families, organizations, and Lagosians affected by the fire, including traders at Central Plaza who suffered losses in a separate fire incident. He described the Afriland Towers fire as worrisome and a significant loss, extending thoughts and prayers to those who lost loved ones and wishing speedy recovery to the injured. Governor Sanwo-Olu also commended the swift intervention of various first responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the Federal Fire Service, for their efforts in containing the blaze and minimizing casualties. He pledged the government's continued commitment to preventing and addressing similar incidents.
President Bola Tinubu also extended his condolences to the victims' families, FIRS, United Capital, and UBA PLC. His spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, conveyed the President's sympathy to the management and staff of Afriland Properties Limited, FIRS, United Capital, and UBA, particularly those who lost loved ones or were injured. President Tinubu lauded the prompt response of the Federal Fire Service, medical teams, first responders, and concerned citizens involved in the evacuation efforts, urging increased caution, training, and vigilance to prevent future tragedies. He offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased and quick recovery for the injured.
In response to the tragedy, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) announced plans to roll out a nationwide Task Force on Fire Safety Compliance. Samuel Olumode, Controller-General of the FFS, stated that this initiative aims to audit public and private buildings, enforce safety standards, sanction non-compliance, train facility managers and staff, and strengthen collaboration with regulatory agencies. He emphasized the critical importance of maintaining functional fire safety equipment and ensuring staff are adequately trained. An FFS investigation team has been deployed to determine the incident's causes, review safety systems, and assess compliance with fire safety regulations, with findings and recommendations to be made public and implemented without delay. The FFS urged facility owners and managers to review safety readiness, secure inverter and generator rooms, ensure unblocked exit pathways, functional alarms, and trained staff, while also advising the public to observe safety protocols and report non-compliance.
