South Africa is bracing for a period of widespread and turbulent weather, with significant showers and thunderstorms predicted to affect multiple provinces. Weather forecaster Odirile Modipa has issued warnings regarding intense systems that are expected to bring disruptive rainfall and cooler conditions to various regions, extending from KwaZulu-Natal inland to Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and the eastern Free State.

In KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), an 80% chance of showers and thundershowers is anticipated across the entire province, with particular concern for disruptive rainfall in the southern regions. While inland areas like Pietermaritzburg are expected to experience a notable cool-down, with maximum temperatures dropping to just 16°C, coastal cities will remain comparatively milder. Durban is forecast to reach 20°C, and other coastal towns such as Port Shepstone could see highs closer to 22°C, though prevalent cloud cover is expected alongside continued showers, posing risks for coastal and rural communities.

Meanwhile, Gauteng is set to face a turbulent weather pattern this evening, with thunderstorms predicted to intensify across the province. These severe thunderstorms are expected to extend into parts of Mpumalanga, central Limpopo, and the eastern Free State, bringing with them disruptive rainfall, particularly to vulnerable areas. Modipa emphasized the severity of the expected conditions across these regions.

Beyond the rainfall, Gauteng residents will also experience cooler overnight temperatures. Johannesburg can expect a minimum of 7°C, while Pretoria will be slightly warmer at 13°C. These cool conditions are indicative of a broader trend of fairly cool overnight temperatures across most parts of the country. Daytime temperatures, however, are projected to improve moderately, with Johannesburg reaching 20°C and Pretoria 22°C.

Authorities are urging residents in all affected provinces to remain alert for potential flooding and travel disruptions. Although the predicted rainfall offers a welcome relief from dry conditions in some areas, its intensity may overwhelm existing infrastructure, especially in low-lying regions. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of inclement weather.
