Kwara Under Siege: Bandits Kill Scores, Abduct Businessman Amid Army Deployment

Kwara State has recently been gripped by a series of devastating attacks orchestrated by armed bandits and terrorists, leading to significant loss of life, numerous abductions, and widespread fear among residents. The escalating insecurity has prompted a swift response from the Nigerian Army Headquarters, which has directed the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Ibadan, to immediately relocate to Kwara State to bolster military operations.
One of the most harrowing incidents occurred in the Ogba-Ayo community, part of Oke-Ode town in Ifelodun Local Government Area, which was stormed by armed bandits in the early hours of a Sunday. This attack resulted in scores of fatalities, including the Baale of the community, his two children, and several forest guards who bravely resisted the assailants. Additionally, Doctor Femi (aka Baba Gold) and two other individuals were declared missing, while five others were abducted. Local vigilante groups, often serving as the primary defense in rural areas, were reportedly overpowered during a fierce confrontation, with at least 10 members, including forest guards, tragically killed.
The severity of these attacks was underscored by reports indicating the attackers’ numerical superiority and the perceived absence of consistent military presence. Residents lamented the sudden withdrawal of Nigerian soldiers from nearby locations, which they believe exposed their communities to such vulnerabilities. A video depicting lifeless bodies in pools of blood further highlighted the grim reality faced by grieving families and sympathizers.
In response to the dire situation, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq promptly requested increased security deployment to counter the criminal activities plaguing parts of Kwara South and Kwara North. The Governor expressed profound condolences to the bereaved families, acknowledging the immense sacrifices of the forest guards and local hunters who, despite losing five compatriots, managed to neutralize several attackers. He urged residents to remain calm and commended the efforts of security forces, while emphasizing the critical need for more decisive action to eradicate the menace.
Beyond the Oke-Ode tragedy, other communities have also been targeted. In the Edu Local Government Area, a local businessman named Suleiman Ndana was abducted during a midnight raid on the Tsaragi community. Days prior, in the Lema community, two brothers working on their farmland were attacked, resulting in one fatality and severe, life-threatening injuries to the other. These incidents have intensified calls for strengthened surveillance and protection in vulnerable rural areas.
Amidst the escalating challenges, security forces have also reported successes. The state police command announced the arrest of three kidnappers—Mohammed Abubakar, Hussein (both from Tsaragi town), and Tukur Ibrahim (a notorious kidnapper)—in a joint operation along the Babanla-Oreke-Oke-Ode axis. Furthermore, troops from the Nigerian Army’s 22 Armoured Brigade, operating under Operation Park Strike V, intercepted a suspected arms courier on September 25, 2025, along the Share–Gbugbu Road in Edu LGA. Acting on credible intelligence, soldiers neutralized the driver who attempted to escape and recovered a cache of five AK-47 rifles and three magazines hidden within a charcoal sack. The courier was reportedly tracked from Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State, a known hub for banditry and arms trafficking.
The cumulative effect of these attacks has left many residents in a state of fear and uncertainty, with some deserting their ancestral homes. The commitment from the Army Headquarters to send the GOC 2 Division to coordinate military responses signifies a serious intent to restore peace and security to the beleaguered communities of Kwara State.
