The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued comprehensive rainfall warnings for Kerala and other states, forecasting widespread rainfall activity in Kerala until July 25, with intensified alerts for heavy rainfall over the coming days. Strong surface winds, reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, are anticipated occasionally over Kerala and Lakshadweep.

On Sunday, July 20, specific alerts were issued across Kerala. Kannur and Kasaragod districts were placed under a red alert, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. Concurrently, an orange alert, signifying very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours), was in effect for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts. Furthermore, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam districts were under a yellow alert, indicating expected heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm). Across India, Kerala and Coastal Karnataka were specifically warned for extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) on July 20.Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar were under an orange alert, with most other states on yellow alert, except Rajasthan.

Looking ahead, an orange alert has been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod on Monday, July 21. Several other districts, including Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, will remain under yellow alert on Monday. For Tuesday and Wednesday (July 22-23), Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod are all on yellow alert. The IMD anticipates monsoon activity to intensify across India due to a low-pressure area expected to form over the Bay of Bengal around July 24, leading to extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala over the next five days, particularly in isolated areas until July 21, and strong winds of 40-50 kmph until July 22.

Meteorological factors influencing these conditions include an east-west trough extending from south Karnataka to south coastal Andhra Pradesh, and a low-pressure area that previously shifted from Gangetic West Bengal to south Jharkhand, associated with a cyclonic circulation. Strong westerlies are also likely to prevail over the Kerala area in lower tropospheric levels. Isolated heavy rainfall is also very likely to continue over Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand from July 23-25; Odisha, Chhattisgarh from July 20-25; Vidarbha from July 21-25; Bihar on July 20 & 21; Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim from July 20-22.

Regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are expected to receive heavy rains till July 24, Uttar Pradesh on July 20 and 21, Punjab and Haryana till July 22 and again on July 24, Tamil Nadu until July 22, and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on July 21. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura are also under heavy rainfall warnings till July 21 and again on July 24 and 25. Delhi-NCR is expected to see increased rainfall in the upcoming week.

In response to the severe weather warnings, authorities have issued various advisories. Squally weather, with wind speeds ranging from 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph, is likely along and off the Kerala coasts, with some warnings extending to 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph in parts of the west-central Arabian Sea. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Incois) has issued high wave alerts, forecasting waves in the range of 3.0-3.3 meters for Alappuzha, Kasaragod, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. A specific swell surge alert was issued for the Thiruvananthapuram coast (Kappil to Pozhiyoor), predicting swell waves of 1.6 to 2 meters with a period of 14-17 seconds until Monday. Fishermen have been strongly warned against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions, and caution is advised for marine operations and nearshore recreation.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has released guidelines for precautions during emergencies. In Kasaragod, the district administration declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and tuition centers, on Sunday, July 20, though pre-scheduled examinations will proceed. Crop loss has been significant in Kozhikode district, with an estimated Rs 44 crore reported due to rains since May. Residents in alerted districts are urged to remain vigilant, avoid water bodies and flood-prone areas, and follow official advisories. Disaster management teams and local administrations are on high alert to respond to any emergencies, reinforcing the state government's plea for public safety and compliance with weather updates.

Widespread rainfall was reported from several places, with Kollam and Chavara each receiving 8 cm of rain in the 24 hours leading up to Saturday morning.
