Keanu Reeves Eyes Explosive New Crime Thriller: The Perfect 'John Wick' Successor Revealed!

Keanu Reeves is reportedly in advanced talks to star in the English-language remake of the acclaimed 2019 Korean action-crime thriller, "The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil," a project set up at Paramount Pictures. The remake will see Reeves team up with acclaimed filmmaker James Wan, who is set to direct and produce the movie. This marks Wan's first feature directorial effort since his 2023 film, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."

Adding an exciting layer to the project, Don Lee, also known as Ma Dong-seok, who starred in the original Korean film, is attached to reprise his iconic role in the English adaptation opposite Reeves. The original thriller garnered significant attention, debuting to rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival. It follows an unlikely alliance between a hardened police officer and a ruthless gangster who are forced to join forces to track down an elusive serial killer.

The production team for "The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil" is robust, with James Wan producing alongside Michael Clear and Jason Blum under their Blumhouse Atomic Monster banner. Other key producers include Don Lee for Big Punch Global, Sylvester Stallone and D. Matt Geller representing Balboa Productions, and Chris S. Lee for B&C Group. Lorenzo di Bonaventura has also joined the production team. The project has been in development since 2019, with Wan officially boarding the production earlier this spring.

The latest script for the remake was penned by Eric Pearson, building upon earlier drafts by Shay Hatten and Brian Helgeland. Helgeland will also serve as an executive producer alongside Billy Acumen. Given Keanu Reeves' history of portraying heroic figures and the critical reception of his previous serial killer role in "The Watcher," it is widely speculated that he will take on the role of the cop in the film, contrasting with Don Lee's reprisal of the gangster.

Reeves, an action movie icon renowned for leading major franchises such as "The Matrix" and "John Wick," continues to have a busy schedule. He recently starred in AppleTV’s dramedy “Outcome,” directed by Jonah Hill, and lent his voice to Duke Caboom in “Toy Story 5.” His upcoming projects include reprising his voice role as the fan-favorite character Shadow in "Sonic the Hedgehog 4," which is scheduled for release on March 19, 2027, from Paramount. Meanwhile, the original "The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil" was written and directed by Lee Won-tae, earning $25 million USD at the box office and holding a 95% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reinforcing the high expectations for its upcoming remake.
