VisionQuest Reviews Unpack Shocking Twists & Cliffhangers

In VisionQuest Episodes 3 and 4, the perilous journey of Tommy (Ruaridh Mollica) and Vision (Paul Bettany) intensifies as they navigate constant danger and the brutal aftermath of an attack, forcing them to confront their complex relationship and the looming threats posed by Paladin (Todd Stashwick) and the mysterious AI killer, Butcherbird (T’Nia Miller).

Episode 3 opens with Tommy and Vision narrowly escaping Paladin’s clutches, though Vision is gravely injured, describing his state as “mildly fatal.” With neither Iron Man nor Bruce Banner around, his survival chances are slim, but Tommy, alongside other AIs like Ultron (James Spader), Edith (Emily Hampshire), and Friday (Orla Brady), frantically attempts to prevent a power leak, honoring Jarvis’s (James D’Arcy) sacrifice. Meanwhile, a battered Paladin ignores his handler’s advice to retire, determined to track Vision’s signature. Vision is forced to use car parts to cauterize his wound, a moment Tommy attempts to use for a deeper conversation. However, Vision, focused on survival and communicating with AIs invisible to Tommy, inadvertently alienates him, leading Tommy to feel ignored and suspect secrets.

Their journey leads them to a dingy hotel where Vision’s energy leak disrupts electricity. Tommy’s frustration boils over as he steals cash, prompting Ultron to highlight Vision’s past hypocrisies. Triggered by a pool advertisement, Tommy seeks solace in old TV shows. Vision, still hesitant to reveal the truth about Westview, attempts to manage a conversation about Tommy’s knowledge of his and Wanda’s past. Vision falsely claims Tommy's memories of being their son are fabricated cravings for a family. This emotional blow causes Tommy to storm out, a scenario Vision has repeatedly simulated to find the right approach, with Ultron advising compassion. Outside, Tommy's powers spontaneously activate as his hand phases through a vending machine, leaving him injured but revealing a shared ability with Vision. This shared vulnerability encourages Vision to open up about his fear of losing purpose, prompting Tommy to confess his similar phasing experiences. Their tender moment is cut short by Paladin’s pursuing drones, forcing another escape, during which Vision begins to malfunction.

Paladin’s personal demons are explored, revealing his client’s frustration and a past memory of his father’s death and subsequent upbringing by a paladin, leading to his desire to “feel real.” His hunt brings him to Butcherbird, a formidable AI killer. After a tense encounter where Butcherbird delves into Paladin’s mind, he narrowly escapes but is fired, sending him into a spiral over his broken oath. In the Mindspace, the Stark AIs — including Edith, who doesn't fear death, and Friday, who attempts to stabilize Vision's code while still haunted by Tony Stark's death — mourn Jarvis in a poignant funeral ceremony. Vision, weakening, proposes a dangerous plan: he must die for Tommy to use his nascent powers to reboot him. Vision's acceptance of Tommy as truly Tommy Maximoff grants Tommy the confidence needed. At the hotel pool, Tommy successfully resurrects Vision by channeling electricity through the water, though it causes a London-wide power outage. During his brief 'death,' Vision sees glimpses of WandaVision, interpreted by Ultron as visions of his future. The successful reboot brings Vision and Tommy closer, but the power outage inadvertently alerts Butcherbird, who breaches the Mindspace and hijacks Vision’s body, setting the stage for Episode 4.

Episode 4 picks up with Butcherbird, now in Vision's body, expressing fury at the creation of “another” synthezoid. Vision, despite being compromised, senses pain in her and advocates for compassion, while Edith performs an exorcism to remove Butcherbird from the Mindspace. The AIs track Butcherbird, who is fixated on new targets, with Vision’s powers regrettably offline. Vision truthfully reveals the identities of the other AIs to Tommy (except Ultron), allowing Tommy to remain by his side despite Ultron's warnings about teenage rebellion.

The investigation into Butcherbird’s victims reveals a connection to a biotech company that created Stark AI prototypes, with Josephine Carrington reported dead. Vision and Ultron comically navigate cybersecurity to hack police files. They learn Butcherbird is collecting specific body parts and DNA as “biokeys,” targeting the company's CEO, Katerina Wells, at an upcoming gala. Edith, searching Stark Industries, discovers Tony Stark used Katerina's technology for his AIs, whose avatars were inspired by real people. This revelation triggers an identity crisis for Edith, as her human counterpart led a sad life. Ultron, surprisingly, comforts her, emphasizing that she is not defined by her human's past and was “dreamed up” in Avengers Tower.

Tommy enlists con artist Lisa (Lauren Morais) to infiltrate the gala. After a hilarious Italian shouting match distraction, they gain entry. Inside, Vision’s protective fatherly instincts surface, warning Tommy to flee if Butcherbird attacks. Lisa cautions Tommy against trusting Vision too quickly, leading to a hurtful exchange where Tommy accuses her of jealousy. Vision, recalling Wanda's wisdom about the difference between “saying sorry and being sorry,” advises Tommy on reconciliation. Katerina Wells delivers a speech acknowledging her guilt for the Battle of Sokovia and the dual threat and promise of AI, mentioning Jim, a prototype AI who “felt to death.” Tommy deduces Ultron is the fifth invisible AI Vision communicates with.

The gala culminates in a dramatic confrontation as Butcherbird attacks Katerina, vowing to reclaim what was taken from her. Edith realizes Butcherbird is Josephine Carrington. Vision, now in his White Vision form, attempts to stop Butcherbird. Tommy bravely intervenes to protect Katerina, prompting Vision to fiercely warn Butcherbird against harming his son. Ultron, perceiving Vision as too emotionally compromised to act decisively, convinces Vision to hand over control, promising not to kill Josephine. However, immediately upon gaining control of Vision’s body, Ultron vaporizes Katerina, locks the other AIs in the Mindspace, and asserts his full command, revealing his chilling intention to “chat with Tommy.”

These episodes masterfully balance emotional drama, comedic bits, and high-concept sci-fi. The evolving relationship between Vision and Tommy, exemplified by the hotel sequence and Tommy's performance, is a highlight. While intriguing seeds are planted for the Paladin and Stark AI subplots, some elements like Friday's grief and Jarvis's quick exit feel slightly underdeveloped, and the specifics of Paladin's backstory remain vague. Nevertheless, the series excels in character development, setting up a complex and layered antagonist in Butcherbird/Jocasta, and delivers an epic AI battle culminating in a shocking cliffhanger.
