Kariba's Deadly Waters: Death Toll Soars to 44 in Tragic Boat Disaster

Thirteen bodies have been retrieved from Lake Kariba following a tragic boat accident involving a Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) vessel. The incident occurred on the afternoon of August 11, 2026, as confirmed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police. Search and recovery operations are currently ongoing at the accident scene, with police and military divers actively working to retrieve additional bodies from the lake. The disaster has plunged families and communities across Zimbabwe into mourning, with several children confirmed to be among the deceased.

According to police officials, 67 victims were successfully rescued from the lake and have been transported to Mahombe-kombe Primary School Command Centre for medical attention and further management. The police issued a statement on Wednesday, confirming that the search process for missing victims is still underway on Lake Kariba, which is shared with Zambia in Siavonga District. Authorities are diligently working to verify the exact number of people who were aboard the vessel at the time of the accident. While the confirmed carrying capacity of the boat was 90 people, excluding the five crew members, initial information provided to the Lake captain suggested it was carrying 120 people, comprising 108 adults and 12 children, who were traveling from Kariba to Chalala.

However, subsequent police investigations indicate that the boat may have been carrying more passengers than initially reported, contributing to the scale of the tragedy. The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterated its social media post concerning the RIDA boat accident. As recovery efforts continue, the police stated that relatives are being contacted, and more details will be availed once they are confirmed.
