Kaizer Chiefs Triumph Over AmaZulu in Epic Durban Clash

Kaizer Chiefs concluded their Betway Premiership season with an intense clash against AmaZulu FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 16 May. This penultimate fixture saw Kaizer Chiefs, already having secured third place and qualification for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup, face an AmaZulu side determined to cement their fourth-place position. Amakhosi entered the match on the back of a crucial 2-0 away victory over Sekhukhune United, a result that boosted their confidence significantly.
The Glamour Boys, with 51 points from 28 matches, were comfortably positioned, while AmaZulu trailed with 44 points from the same number of games. Adding to Kaizer Chiefs' pre-match confidence was the memory of their earlier season encounter, a dramatic 1-1 draw at the FNB Stadium in October. In that match, Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya gave AmaZulu an early lead, and although Glody Lilepo missed a penalty, Mduduzi Shabalala quickly equalized to rescue a point for Chiefs in Johannesburg, hinting at the potential for another tight battle.
As the match commenced, both teams showed intent despite the reduced pressure on their league standings. Kaizer Chiefs started brightly, with Mfundo Vilakazi once again showcasing his confidence, and Ethan Chislett returning to the starting lineup. AmaZulu also created early opportunities, with former Amakhosi midfielder Pule Ekstein nearly scoring and Sandile Mthethwa forcing an important save from Brandon Petersen. Despite enjoying more possession, Kaizer Chiefs found it challenging to create consistent openings in the first half against a disciplined AmaZulu defence, with Flavio Silva and Glody Lilepo struggling to find space.
The game’s tempo significantly increased after halftime, with more attacking flair from both sides. Ekstein continued to test Petersen from distance, while Chislett and Reeve Frosler also went close for Kaizer Chiefs. The breakthrough finally arrived in the final 20 minutes when Glody Lilepo scored after a period of sustained pressure from Amakhosi. However, the celebrations quickly turned dramatic as Lilepo removed his shirt, earning him a second yellow card and forcing Chiefs to finish the match with 10 men.
Despite being a man down, Kaizer Chiefs held on to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over AmaZulu, marking back-to-back wins in the Betway Premiership. This result underscored Kaizer Chiefs’ strong finish to the season, solidifying their third-place position, and provided a lively spectacle for fans at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
