John Wick's Unstoppable Rise: From Box Office Flop to Streaming Juggernaut on HBO Max!

Fans of the acclaimed John Wick franchise have been anticipating further expansions to its cinematic universe, and recent announcements confirm these expectations. A new spin-off film centered on Caine, the blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, has officially been confirmed. Donnie Yen will reprise his role as Caine and is also set to direct the as-yet-untitled Lionsgate production from a screenplay by Mattson Tomlin. Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson expressed excitement for this strategic partnership, highlighting Yen's vision and signature style in extending the John Wick universe.
This announcement follows the mixed reception and theatrical performance of a previous spin-off, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. Released in early June 2025, Ballerina aimed to pass the action baton to a younger star, with Ana de Armas taking on the role of ballerina-assassin Eve Maccaro. The film, set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4, delves into Eve's training within the Ruska Roma assassin traditions. Directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten, the cast also featured Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, Gabriel Byrne, Anjelica Huston, and notably, Lance Reddick in his final screen appearance.
Despite its intriguing premise and ensemble cast, Ballerina faced a challenging theatrical run. Against a reported budget of $90 million, it grossed only $137.2 million worldwide, falling short of profitability and becoming one of 2025's more disappointing box office outcomes. Its runtime was 125 minutes, and producers included Basil Iwanyk, Chad Stahelski, and Erica Lee.
However, Ballerina later found a more respectable audience on streaming platforms. At the time of writing, it achieved the status of the most-watched movie on HBO Max in the U.S., surpassing John Wick: Chapter 4, Dune, and Dune: Part Two. Critically, the film garnered positive praise, securing a strong 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus lauded the film for
