The second season finale of Jonathan Tropper's darkly comedic Apple TV crime series, 'Your Friends & Neighbors', brought heightened complications and messy situations for its protagonist, Coop (Jon Hamm). Central to this season's drama was the introduction and eventual demise of Owen Ashe, portrayed by James Marsden, a character designed to be both charmingly irresistible and an unsustainable menace.

Owen Ashe made a significant impact upon moving into Coop's wealthy suburban neighborhood, swiftly entangling himself in the lives of Coop, Sam, Barney, and Nick. His character, described by Tropper as a 'Great Gatsby' figure, was crafted to be mysterious, affable, and a magnet for the other characters. He embodied an exaggerated version of their value system – rich, handsome, and charming – yet gradually revealed a pathetic dependence on validation, devoid of a moral center. Creator Jonathan Tropper confirmed that Ashe was always conceived as a one-season character. He explained that the high energy, intrigue, and specific storyline surrounding Ashe would be exceedingly difficult to sustain over multiple seasons. Securing James Marsden for the role was also a challenge, requiring extensive persuasion and a unique pitch given that Season 2 was shooting before Season 1 had even aired or become a hit. Despite his problematic actions, Ashe was intentionally written to retain a degree of likability, allowing viewers to empathize with his twisted desire to be loved.
