Jack White Electrifies and Enthralls on SNL: New Songs and Hilarious Flubs

Jack White, the renowned Detroit rocker, made a memorable and multi-faceted appearance on Saturday Night Live during the episode hosted by Jack Black on April 4. White not only served as the musical guest, performing new tracks, but also delivered a hilariously unforgettable cameo in a pre-recorded sketch, showcasing his comedic timing and versatility.
One of the highlights of the evening was the pre-recorded sketch titled “Words to Live By (Country Song).” In this nearly five-minute clip, a group of men attempts to recall profound wisdom they have received, only to find their memories failing them. The sketch opens with James Austin Johnson, sporting a mullet, struggling to remember his father's deathbed advice. Jack Black, donned in a cowboy hat and playing an acoustic guitar, then attempts to recollect wisdom gleaned from a sage in a Tibetan cave. Towards the sketch's climax, Black introduces White, instructing him to “hit ’em with a guitar solo.” The scene dramatically cuts to White, dressed entirely in black with a cowboy hat, perched majestically on a snow-capped mountain as an eagle soars past. He immediately launches into a country-tinged guitar lick but abruptly stumbles, admitting, “Wait, wait… I forgot it. I forgot the f—king solo,” much to the audience's delight.
Beyond his comedic turn, Jack White captivated audiences as the musical guest, debuting two newly released and electrifying tracks. For his first performance, White took to a blue-lit stage adorned with wooden crates and a striking white statue featuring a glass skeleton head, delivering a powerful rendition of “Derecho Demonico” with his backing band. Later in the show, he returned to perform the feral track “G.O.D. And The Broken Ribs,” this time wearing a jacket emblazoned with a NASA logo, a subtle yet intriguing nod to the recently launched, moon-bound Artemis II mission. The track featured evocative lyrics such as, “Well, it’s the beginning of the world now/ And there’s nobody left… Let’s start again… Let’s do it all over again.” White’s most recent solo album, *No Name*, was released in 2024.
The evening also featured a surprise collaborative performance during the opening monologue. Jack White joined host Jack Black and several esteemed returning members of SNL’s Five-Timers Club, including Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Candice Bergen, and Melissa McCarthy, for an impromptu rendition of the White Stripes’ iconic track “Seven Nation Army.” This segment further underscored the celebratory atmosphere of the episode.
The April 4 episode marked significant milestones for both artists: Jack Black celebrated his fifth time hosting Saturday Night Live, a testament to his enduring popularity, while Jack White made his sixth appearance as a musical guest. White’s history with the show dates back to his SNL debut with the White Stripes in 2002. Jack Black's hosting duties coincided with his promotional efforts for his return as the voice of Bowser in the animated sequel *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, which premiered on April 1. Black also achieved a solo Billboard Hot 100 debut in 2023 with "Peaches" from *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, peaking at No. 56 on the chart.
This episode cemented itself as a memorable installment of Saturday Night Live, blending musical talent, comedic prowess, and star-studded collaborations, leaving a lasting impression on viewers.
