Lagos Fires Destroy Millions in Goods and Property Across Ikorodu, Surulere
Lagos State experienced a series of emergencies this week, including two significant fire outbreaks in Ikorodu and Surulere, which destroyed property worth millions. LASEMA also responded to multiple road incidents, highlighting the agency's swift and coordinated efforts to protect lives and property across the state. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reported two separate fire outbreaks in Ikorodu and Surulere, destroying goods and property worth millions of naira. According to the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the first fire occurred in the early hours of Monday at Adamo Bus Stop, Ikorodu, where a suspected electrical fault sparked a blaze in a hairdressing shop before spreading to two adjoining shops.
LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly, bringing the fire under control and conducting dampening-down operations, with no deaths or injuries recorded.
Later that morning, another fire destroyed two shops at 19 Olatunde Onimole Street, near Bakery Bus Stop, Surulere, housing furniture and provisions businesses. The shops and their contents were destroyed, although no casualties or injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remained undetermined.
Beyond the fires, LASEMA teams also responded to several road emergencies, including a soft-drinks truck breakdown at Olupese Bus Stop, a yellow commercial bus that overturned on Third Mainland Bridge following a reported tyre burst, and an empty tanker breakdown on Ilupeju Road, with responders using heavy-duty recovery equipment to clear the obstructions and restore traffic.
Oke-Osanyintolu commended LASTMA, LASAMBUS, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps for their coordination during the emergencies.
He said the Lagos State Government remains committed to protecting lives and property through personnel training, modern emergency equipment, and the decentralisation of LASEMA Response Units to improve response times across the state.
He also urged residents to properly maintain vehicles and comply with electrical safety standards to reduce the risk of preventable fires and other emergencies.
