Zimbabwe & Zambia Ban Heavy Traffic on 120-Year-Old Victoria Falls Bridge

Zambia and Zimbabwe have agreed to ban trains and heavy trucks from the Victoria Falls Bridge — a 120-year-old crossing over the Zambezi River that doubles as a major tourist attraction.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema announced the decision at the Engineering Institution of Zambia conference in Livingstone.

A new road and rail bridge will be built a few kilometres downstream to handle heavy commercial traffic.

The Victoria Falls Bridge, built in 1905, currently serves as a critical artery for cross-border trade and tourism between the two countries.

The move is designed to preserve the bridge while improving transport efficiency in the region.
