Hunger Games Star's New Netflix Rom-Com Explodes Into Instant Sensation

The past weekend brought significant changes to Netflix's U.S. streaming charts, with new titles claiming the top spots in both the TV and movie categories. On the television front, the new limited series "His & Hers," featuring the eye-catching duo of Jon Bernthal and Tessa Thompson, has taken over as the most-streamed title, ending the long-standing dominance of shows like "Stranger Things” fifth and final season and Harlan Coben's "Run Away."
Meanwhile, on the movie charts, the globetrotting romantic comedy "People We Meet on Vacation" quickly ascended to the number one position during its debut weekend. This instant hit, based on Emily Henry's bestselling novel of the same name, stars Emily Bader ("My Lady Jane") as free-spirited Poppy and Tom Blyth ("The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes") as routine-loving Alex. The duo showcases undeniable chemistry in a decade-spanning will-they/won't-they narrative that explores the careful balance of their friendship and the potential for a romantic match.
The film boasts a talented supporting cast, including Alan Ruck, Molly Shannon, Sarah Catherine Hook, Jameela Jamil, Lukas Gage, and Miles Heizer. Its plot centers on Poppy and Alex, who have been unlikely best friends for a decade, always spending their summer vacations together despite living in different cities. Their bond is put to the test when they start to question what has been evident to everyone else: they might just be the perfect romantic pairing.
"People We Meet on Vacation" has garnered impressive critical acclaim, defying expectations for a movie released in a typically underwhelming month. It has earned strong 79% scores from both critics and audiences on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers have particularly highlighted the film's central performances and its heartwarming, emotional climax.
Collider's Carly Lane, for instance, awarded the film a 9/10, praising Bader and Blyth as an " irresistibly charming duo" and noting that the decision to shift the story's present-day settings from Palm Springs to Barcelona resulted in some of the film's "most stunning locations," evoking a sense of wanderlust in viewers.
The movie runs for 109 minutes and was directed by Brett Haley. The screenplay was penned by Yulin Kuang, Emily Henry, Nunzio Randazzo, and Amos Vernon. Producers include Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, and Isaac Klausner. "People We Meet on Vacation" is currently streaming on Netflix.
