Horror in Niger: 30 Killed, Dozens Abducted in Brutal Mosque Attacks, Tinubu Orders Rescue Mission
Terrorist attacks on four mosques in Niger State's Borgu LGA have resulted in at least 30 deaths and over 60 abductions during Friday prayers. President Bola Tinubu has expressed outrage, ordering all security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and vowing that the perpetrators will not escape justice.
In a horrific incident that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria, at least 30 people have been killed following coordinated terrorist attacks on four mosques in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The assaults occurred simultaneously last Friday during Juma’at prayers in the communities of Dekara, Kpenya, Sabon-Gida, and Gidan-Zana, where assailants abducted dozens of worshippers and marched them into a forest.
Mohammed Nasir Abdullahi, the Chairman of Borgu LGA, confirmed the devastating toll on Monday, stating that close to 30 of those initially abducted had been killed by their captors. He reported that the affected communities had since recovered and buried the bodies of the victims. Abdullahi also detailed that over 60 worshippers were kidnapped during the violent attacks. In addition to the abductions and killings, several houses were set ablaze by the terrorists, including the residence of the District Head of Dekara, Abubakar Umar.
The renewed violence has compelled scores of residents to flee their homes, with many seeking refuge in New Bussa or even crossing into the neighboring Benin Republic. This mass displacement followed explicit threats from the terrorists to harm anyone who remained in the affected areas. While a military presence has since helped restore relative calm to the communities, many residents remain too terrified to return.
In response to the egregious attacks, President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern directive to the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and all relevant security and intelligence agencies. The President ordered an immediate intensification of efforts to rescue the victims abducted from the Niger mosques and bring the perpetrators to justice. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed profound outrage over the abduction and killing of innocent citizens, unequivocally labeling the attackers as “enemies of peace and enemies of humanity.”
