Horror in Modena: Car Plows Into Crowd, Injuring Seven in Northern Italy

A dramatic incident unfolded on Saturday in Modena, a city in northern Italy, where a car deliberately rammed into a group of pedestrians, injuring eight people, four of whom are in critical condition. The incident occurred on a road in the central area of the city, with the car reportedly aiming for the pavement, hitting a bicycle, and then crashing "head-on" into a woman, whose legs were severely crushed. Reports indicate she may require the amputation of both legs. Following the initial impact, the vehicle continued, crashing into a shop window.
The driver, identified as a 31-year-old Italian national of Moroccan origin, who resides in the Modena area and has no previous convictions, was arrested shortly after the incident. Authorities are currently questioning him at police headquarters to ascertain whether he was under the influence of substances or if his actions were deliberate. Eyewitnesses described the car driving onto the pavement "at high speed" and heard "people being hit." One pedestrian managed to jump out of the way, noting that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, though this remains unconfirmed by authorities.
After the crash, the driver allegedly attempted to flee the scene and was seen with a knife in his hand, trying to stab a passerby who intervened. However, he did not manage to wound anyone with the weapon. Several courageous citizens, estimated to be four or five, chased and helped capture the driver. Two of the critically injured pedestrians were transported to the Maggiore Hospital in Bologna, while two others were taken to the hospital in Modena for urgent medical attention.
Massimo Mezzetti, the Mayor of Modena, expressed his deep shock and labelled the event "dramatic" and "extremely serious." He emphasized the need to understand the motive behind the act, stating that if it turns out to be an attack, "that would be even more serious." Mayor Mezzetti also extended his gratitude to the citizens who bravely intervened, commending their courage and civic sense.
The Italian government is closely monitoring the situation. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni communicated her solidarity with the injured and their families. She is in contact with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano to receive real-time updates, with an anti-terrorism unit reportedly involved in the investigation. Prime Minister Meloni thanked the citizens and law enforcement for their actions and expressed her trust that the perpetrator would be held fully accountable.
