Horror in Jos: Popular Model Brutally Mob-Killed Over iPhone Theft Accusation, Police Arrest Suspects

Ibrahim Mbaya, a 25-year-old model popularly known as Ibee, tragically died after being brutally assaulted in Plateau State on Sunday, July 26, 2026. The incident occurred in the Ring Road area of Jos North Local Government Area, following accusations that he had stolen an iPhone. Mbaya, a chef and contestant for Mr. And Miss Glam, Nigeria 2026, vehemently denied the allegation.

Instead of reporting the matter to the relevant authorities, several individuals took the law into their own hands, subjecting Mbaya to a severe and prolonged assault using various weapons. He was eventually rushed to a hospital in Jos, where he succumbed to the extensive injuries he sustained from the beating.

The killing of the fast-rising model has ignited widespread outrage across Plateau State and on social media platforms. Family members, friends, students, and members of the entertainment industry are collectively demanding justice for the deceased, condemning the act of jungle justice.

Investigations revealed that Mbaya had attended a social event on campus and decided to spend the night at a friend's residence in Ring Road, deeming it too late to return home to Rayfield. The following morning, his friend allegedly informed him that an iPhone had gone missing and, based on their being the sole occupants of the room, insisted that Mbaya was the prime suspect. Although Mbaya initially left the apartment, he returned after receiving a telephone call from the friend, who requested his presence to explain himself.

Upon his return, Mbaya was reportedly confronted by his friend and several other young men in the compound. Eyewitnesses alleged that the group descended upon him, subjecting him to severe torture and beating in an attempt to force a confession. The brutal assault, which was captured on camera, lasted for several hours, during which the victim was allegedly beaten with dangerous objects until he became unconscious.

The Plateau State Police Command has since arrested three suspects in connection with the brutal mob killing. SP Alfred Alabo, the spokesperson for the command, confirmed the incident and the arrests in a statement issued on Monday, July 27, 2026. The police received a report at approximately 11:20 p.m. on July 26 from a Good Samaritan at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), informing them that some youths had brought an unconscious man to the facility under suspicious circumstances.

Police operatives immediately responded, identifying the victim as Ibrahim Mbaya. Tragically, he was confirmed dead on arrival by the medical doctor on duty. His remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Rinji Daniel Fwanji (25), Emmanuel Newyear (30), and Nensemka Fwanji (22). Emmanuel Newyear was notably captured in a viral video using a large wooden plank to assault the deceased victim.

The suspects, during questioning, admitted that they suspected Mbaya of stealing an iPhone 12. However, instead of reporting the matter to law enforcement, they took the law into their own hands, attacking and beating him to unconsciousness. The arrested suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Jos, where a discreet investigation is ongoing. Efforts are also intensified to apprehend other fleeing suspects connected to the crime, and upon conclusion of the investigation, all suspects will be charged to court accordingly.

The Plateau State Police Command strongly condemns the resort to jungle justice, reiterating that no individual or group possesses the legal authority to assault or kill any person suspected of committing an offense. SP Alabo emphasized that Nigeria's Administration of Criminal Justice System provides lawful procedures for investigating and prosecuting criminal offenses, ensuring every suspect is entitled to due process under the law. The public is urged to always report cases of theft, assault, or any other criminal activity to the nearest Police Station or recognized security agencies for appropriate action, warning that self-help and mob action not only undermine the rule of law but also expose perpetrators to criminal prosecution.
