Horror in Derby: Man Arrested After Car Plows Into Multiple Pedestrians, Leaving Several Seriously Injured

A man has been arrested after multiple individuals were struck by a car in Derby city centre on Saturday night, an incident that left some seriously injured. The event, involving a black Suzuki Swift, occurred around 9:30 pm in the Friar Gate area. Emergency services promptly responded, treating several people at the scene, some for serious injuries, before they were transported to a hospital.

Shortly after the incident, police located and stopped the vehicle believed to be involved. The driver, identified as a man in his 30s, was arrested and is currently in police custody. Derbyshire Police have since launched an investigation into the matter and have reassured the public that there is no ongoing risk.

In response to the incident, a significant section of Friar Gate has been closed to traffic, specifically from the junction of Curzon Street/Cheapside up to Ford Street. This road closure is expected to remain in effect for a considerable time, and the public is advised to avoid the area completely.

The news prompted reactions from local politicians. Catherine Atkinson, the Labour MP for Derby North, stated she was 'deeply shocked' by the reports of serious injuries. She extended her gratitude to the emergency services and urged people to follow police advice, avoid the area, and contact authorities with any information. Baggy Shanker, the MP for Derby South, also expressed his thoughts to 'everyone who has been affected and with their loved ones'.

Derbyshire Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to assist their investigation. They specifically want to hear from anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in Derby around the time of the incident. Information can be shared directly with Derbyshire Police via their website, a private message on Facebook, or by calling 101, quoting incident 1131 of March 28. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or through their website. East Midlands Ambulance Service and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for further comment on this developing story.
