Horror Crash on Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway Claims 11 Lives

A tragic road crash claimed the lives of no fewer than 11 passengers on Sunday night, May 10, 2026, along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway in Ogun State. The fatal incident occurred at Eruku Bridge when a gold Toyota vehicle, bearing registration number GGE722KJ, somersaulted and plunged off the bridge. The sheer impact of the crash caused the vehicle's doors to lock, trapping all its occupants inside.
Afolabi Odunsi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), officially confirmed the devastating accident in a statement released on Monday in Abeokuta. He detailed that all 11 individuals on board, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, tragically lost their lives in the crash.
Immediately following the incident, operatives from the FRSC rescue team, specifically from the Itori Unit Command, were promptly deployed to the scene. Due to the challenging circumstances of the occupants being trapped within the locked vehicle, FRSC personnel, alongside significant assistance from members of the local community, undertook the difficult task of dismantling the vehicle to recover the bodies. The remains of the deceased were subsequently transported and deposited at the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo.
Preliminary investigations into the crash have identified “Driving Under the Influence” (DUI) and “Overloading” (OVL) as the probable causes of the tragic accident. These factors are believed to have contributed to the vehicle losing control, leading to its somersault and eventual fall from the bridge.
Reacting to the heartbreaking loss of life, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, extended his heartfelt condolences and commiserated with the families of the deceased victims. Commander Ogunjobi also issued a crucial advisory to all travelers utilizing the Abeokuta-Lagos route, urging them to exercise extreme caution, particularly when driving during nighttime hours, to prevent the recurrence of such devastating tragedies.
