Horrific Kwara Massacre: Shettima Condemns Attack on Tolerant Community

Kwara State, known as the “State of Harmony,” is currently facing serious security challenges after violent attacks in some of its communities.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima led a federal government delegation to the state and strongly condemned the attacks in Nuku and Woro communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, describing them as a violation of the residents’ right to practice their religion peacefully.
On February 4, terrorists attacked both communities, killing at least 75 people and destroying several homes.
Other reports suggested the death toll could be as high as 160, with victims reportedly killed for refusing to accept an unfamiliar belief system.
Shettima stated that the victims were peaceful Muslims who practiced their faith according to their traditions, and he described the attackers’ ideology as foreign to the region’s history and culture.
Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq blamed the violence on extremist groups, which led President Bola Tinubu to order the immediate deployment of an army battalion to the affected areas.
Shettima confirmed that troops had been sent with clear instructions to restore security and eliminate the attackers.
He also noted that communities in Kaiama, Baruten, and nearby regions have a long history of practicing Islam peacefully and tolerantly.
The attacks are part of a wider security crisis that has affected Kwara State for nearly a year.
Many communities have been displaced, while kidnappings and violent crimes have increased. Farmers are unable to work safely, and schools, markets, and health centers have been forced to close due to fear.
Reports indicate that the attack on Woro community was carefully planned, with gunmen gathering before launching their assault, raising concerns about intelligence and security preparedness.
Kwara’s location, which connects northern and southern Nigeria and borders several states, makes it strategically important but also vulnerable to criminal activities.
Defence Spokesman Major General Samaila Uba stated that the attackers tried to force their beliefs on villagers through violence and intimidation. President Tinubu also praised residents for refusing to accept violent extremism.
This violence is not an isolated incident. In September last year, criminals attacked Maganiko Ndanangi community, kidnapping residents.
Days later, armed bandits killed at least 15 forest guards and others in Oke-Ode. These repeated attacks have worsened security concerns across the state.
Northern Kwara has become especially dangerous due to its forests, poor road networks, and large unmonitored areas.
Criminals operate freely, especially along routes such as Patigi–Gbugbu–Lafiagi–Tsaragi–Bacita. Even the NYSC orientation camp in Yikpata had to relocate because of security threats.
Forest areas have become hideouts for criminals involved in kidnapping and other violent crimes.
With security forces already under pressure nationwide, there is an urgent need for stronger protection of rural communities and more effective action against extremist violence.
Governor Abdulrazaq confirmed that troops under Operation Savannah Shield have been deployed to prevent further attacks, as the government works to restore safety and stability in Kwara State.
