Hoops Immortals Crowned: Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2025 Revealed

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is officially welcoming its Class of 2025 this weekend, with enshrinement ceremonies taking place in Springfield, Massachusetts. Announced in April at the men's NCAA basketball Final Four, this year's class features a blend of NBA and WNBA legends, alongside the iconic 2008 U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball 'Redeem Team'. The enshrinement weekend commences on September 5th at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut with a tipoff celebration and awards gala, including the presentation of jackets and rings, before the main ceremony on September 6th in Springfield.
Among the individual inductees are NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard, a small but exceptionally significant class. Carmelo Anthony, renowned as one of the sport's purest scorers, culminated a 19-year NBA career with 28,289 points, placing him tenth on the all-time scoring list. His illustrious career includes 10 All-Star selections, six All-NBA honors, and an NBA scoring title in 2013. Beyond the NBA, Anthony led Syracuse to its first and only NCAA national championship as a freshman in 2003, earning Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. He also boasts a formidable Olympic legacy with USA Basketball, securing three gold medals and holding the USA scoring record for points in a single Olympic game. Despite never winning an NBA championship, Anthony's overall accomplishments and impact on teams like the New York Knicks solidified his status as a clear-cut Hall of Famer, transcending the 'ring-obsessed discourse' often associated with player evaluation.
Dwight Howard, the other NBA player inductee, is celebrated as a deserving first-ballot entrant. His 18-season career saw him achieve eight All-Star selections, eight All-NBA honors, and an impressive three Defensive Player of the Year awards. Howard's peak with the Orlando Magic was particularly dominant, earning him five consecutive All-NBA First Team nods and consistently placing him among the top MVP candidates. While his post-Magic career saw him transition through multiple teams, including a key bench role in the Los Angeles Lakers' 2020 championship run, his initial eight seasons alone secured his Hall of Fame credentials. His exclusion from the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team has been noted as an 'underrating' of his historical impact, given his unique achievement of five consecutive first-team All-NBA selections, a feat shared with only 18 other players in NBA history, including legends like Shaquille O'Neal and George Mikan. Howard's defensive prowess was also instrumental in the Magic's pioneering of a modern, three-point heavy offensive system.
The WNBA's representation in this class is historic, featuring three of the league's all-time greats: Sue Bird, Sylvia Fowles, and Maya Moore. This marks the first time three WNBA players have been inducted into the Hall of Fame simultaneously. All three were previously recognized in 'The W25' during the WNBA's 25th anniversary celebration. Sue Bird, with a career spanning over two decades and 19 active seasons, holds the WNBA's all-time records for games played, assists, and minutes. She is a 13-time All-Star, eight-time All-WNBA selection, four-time WNBA champion, and a five-time Olympic gold medalist. Sylvia Fowles, a 2017 WNBA MVP, four-time Defensive Player of the Year, and two-time WNBA champion, retired as the league's all-time leading rebounder. Maya Moore, a 2014 WNBA MVP and four-time WNBA champion, made an immense impact in her brief eight-season career before stepping away from the game in her prime to focus on social justice issues, including overturning the wrongful conviction of her now-husband, Jonathan Irons. The interconnectedness of these three women is evident through their shared NCAA and WNBA championships, and their collective success as Olympic gold medalists for the U.S.
A notable point of convergence for this year's class is their shared Olympic legacy. Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard are not only being inducted as individual players but also as members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball 'Redeem Team'. This team famously captured the gold medal in Beijing after the U.S. had fallen short in the 2004 Athens Olympics and previous FIBA World Championships, successfully fulfilling its mission to win both gold and national respect. Sue Bird and Sylvia Fowles were also gold medalists in 2008, while Maya Moore joined them in 2012 and 2016. All five inductees collectively account for 15 Olympic gold medals, with Bird (five), Fowles (four), and Anthony (three) ranking among the most decorated basketball players in Olympic history.
Rounding out the Class of 2025 are Chicago Bulls coach and two-time NCAA champion Billy Donovan, Miami Heat managing general partner Micky Arison, and longtime NBA referee Danny Crawford. The collective achievements of this class are staggering, including 11 WNBA or NBA championship teams, 15 Olympic gold medals, 37 All-NBA or All-WNBA appearances, and 45 All-Star selections. This diverse and accomplished group highlights a significant moment in basketball history, particularly underscoring the increasing recognition of WNBA legends in the sport's highest honor.
