Hollywood Writers Reach New Deal: WGA Ratifies Four-Year Contract with Major Health Plan Cuts

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has successfully ratified a new four-year contract with major Hollywood studios, bringing a significant agreement to the forefront of industry labor relations. The 2026 Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA), effective from May 2, 2026, through May 1, 2030, was overwhelmingly approved by the guild's members, with 90.38% (4,282 votes) in favor and 9.62% (456 votes) against. This ratification marks the first major deal concluded in the current negotiation cycle, setting a precedent for ongoing talks with other unions.
A central component of this new contract involves substantial changes to the writers’ health plan. For the first time, WGA members will face individual premiums. The agreement also introduces higher deductibles, increased out-of-pocket maximums, and a significant reduction in the "extended coverage points" system, which previously allowed writers to maintain health insurance during periods of unemployment. These difficult concessions were necessitated by four years of continuous deficits in the health fund, averaging $50 million annually, a situation exacerbated by spiraling healthcare cost inflation and a downturn in film and television production.
In exchange for these health plan modifications, the studios have committed to injecting an estimated $321 million into the health fund over the next four years, including $280 million in new contributions. This financial commitment is aimed at stabilizing the fund and ensuring its long-term sustainability. WGAW President Michele Mulroney acknowledged the necessity of these changes, stating, "In the face of industry contraction and runaway healthcare cost inflation, writers were able to secure a contract that returns our Health Fund to a sustainable path and builds on gains from the 2023 strike." She further added, "We came into this knowing we might have to make changes. We wanted to keep them as manageable as possible."
Beyond the health plan, the contract also includes important gains and safeguards for writers, building on the achievements of the 2023 strike. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) noted the deal includes "historic investments in the writers’ health plan, meaningful improvements in residuals and wages, and important safeguards for their work." Specifically, the "success bonus" for popular streaming shows has been increased from 50% to 75% of a writer’s base residual, though the method for determining success remains unchanged. Furthermore, the agreement preserves the 2023 accord on staffing levels in writers’ rooms, maintaining the mandatory minimum size and successfully resisting the AMPTP’s efforts to reinstitute pre-greenlight "mini rooms."
One area where consensus remains elusive is artificial intelligence (AI). While the studios agreed to hold further meetings on the topic, they did not commit to compensating writers if their scripts are utilized to train AI models. This indicates that discussions around AI's role and compensation in creative industries are still in their early stages and will likely be a recurring point of negotiation in future agreements.
The ratification of the WGA contract provides a blueprint for upcoming negotiations. The AMPTP is slated to resume bargaining with SAG-AFTRA next Monday, following a month of talks in late February and early March. Optimism surrounds the possibility of reaching a deal with SAG-AFTRA before the Directors Guild of America (DGA) begins its negotiations with the studios on May 11. This WGA agreement largely maintains the status quo on the contentious issues that fueled the 148-day strike in 2023, signaling a period of cautious stability in the industry's labor landscape. The collaborative approach underscored by the AMPTP is seen as supportive of both writers and the industry’s long-term stability.
