Hollywood Titan Skydance Faces Massive Corporate Shake-Up and Financial Scrutiny
The merger of Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery is ushering in a wave of executive changes across streaming, sports, and international operations. Casey Bloys expands his role to oversee HBO Max and Paramount+, David Berson takes charge of merged sports properties, and international leadership sees a significant overhaul with key executives departing.
The groundbreaking combination of Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery is instigating significant changes across its executive leadership and corporate structure, impacting streaming services, sports operations, and international divisions. These shifts are unfolding as Skydance prepares to officially close its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
A major development sees Casey Bloys, previously CEO and chief content officer of HBO and HBO Max, secure a new multiyear extension to his contract. He has been appointed to the expanded role of co-chair and chief content officer for Skydance DTC, which will now oversee both HBO Max and Paramount+. This new position grants him authority over original programming, strategy, operations, communications, and performance across both streaming platforms. Bloys' commitment to this new structure is highlighted by his deal renewal, which follows his previous five-year contract signed in October 2022. His tenure at HBO, which began in 2004, has been marked by the success of critically acclaimed series such as “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us,” “House of the Dragon,” “Succession,” and “Chernobyl.” The expansion of his role occurred shortly after Paramount direct-to-consumer chair Cindy Holland's departure. Further details regarding the new executive leadership team under Bloys are anticipated.
On the sports front, David Berson, currently the head of CBS Sports, is set to lead the merged company's broader sports operations. This transition means that Luis Silberwasser, Warner Bros. Discovery’s top sports executive, will be leaving his position. In a memo to staffers, Silberwasser expressed his full support for the decision and the future strategy, emphasizing the talent and commitment of the organization's people. Berson will now manage a significantly expanded portfolio, integrating CBS Sports' NFL and Masters golf rights with Warner's properties, which include NHL, Major League Baseball games, and the U.S. rights to the French Open. For the first time in years, the NCAA March Madness college basketball championship will fall under the oversight of a single company, having previously been a shared right between CBS and Warner due to rising fees. Warner Bros. Discovery has been proactive in diversifying its sports content, adding properties like the College Football Playoff, Roland-Garros, NASCAR, and launching initiatives such as the "Dunkman" league and an investment in the Unrivaled women's sports league. Berson's experience, particularly with Paramount+ alignments and rights negotiations for PGA Tour Golf, positions him to wield increased influence with major sports leagues.
The international divisions are also undergoing substantial restructuring. Despite earlier reports, Kevin MacLellan, Paramount’s president of international and global content distribution, will not be taking a top international leadership role in the new organization. Insiders suggest that Skydance leaders David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz are planning a comprehensive reorganization of the international segment. MacLellan, with a background spanning Paramount and NBCUniversal, was praised as a transformative leader in his previous roles. Concurrently, Gerhard Zeiler, president of international for Warner Bros. Discovery, is also expected to depart the company to pursue a career in Austrian politics. David Ellison, CEO of Skydance, shared his vision for the combined entity, stating it would be a "creative-first home with the scale, imagination and technology to define entertainment for a generation." Ynon Kreiz further articulated the team's goals: to establish Skydance as the premier Hollywood content engine, accelerate its integrated DTC platform with leading-edge technology, and optimize its profitable linear TV portfolio globally. Key executives such as Dana Goldberg, Josh Greenstein, James Gunn, Peter Safran, George Cheeks, and JB Perrette are confirmed to continue in their roles. However, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group heads Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca will not be joining the new company.
