Keke Palmer & Jack Whitehall Tease Wild Finale Twist in Peacock’s ‘The ’Burbs’

Peacock’s new eight-episode series The ’Burbs reimagines Joe Dante’s 1989 cult classic as a modern whodunnit comedy packed with mystery and satire. Starring Keke Palmer and Jack Whitehall as new parents Samira and Rob Fisher, the show blends suburban paranoia with sharp humor.
Filmed on the Universal Studios Hollywood back lot, the series is filled with visual Easter eggs while crafting a fresh story that stands apart from the original film. It resolves its core mystery but strategically leaves the door wide open for a second season.
The project originated with executive producer Seth MacFarlane, who initially envisioned a film before the idea evolved into a television format during the pandemic. The heightened sense of neighborhood awareness during COVID reshaped the narrative into a story about community secrets rather than fear of outsiders.
Showrunner Celeste Hughey, who wrote the pilot, designed the series as a fish-out-of-water story centered on a Black woman navigating motherhood and suburban life.
While the iconic Colonial Street returns, the reimagining intentionally flips elements from the 1989 movie, including redefining the “creepy house” dynamic.
The suspense revolves around Gary (Justin Kirk), whose unsettling behavior draws Samira into an escalating investigation. She teams up with an eccentric group of neighbors, each harboring secrets that complicate the mystery.
At its emotional core, the show focuses on Samira and Rob’s marriage as they juggle sleepless nights, trust issues, and increasingly bizarre events in Hinkley Hills. Palmer and Whitehall’s real-life parenting experiences add authenticity to the couple’s evolving dynamic.
The finale delivers a major reveal while introducing an even bigger conspiracy involving the neighborhood HOA. With Naveen abducted and deeper cover-ups exposed, the series positions itself for a high-stakes Season 2.
