Utopai Studios and DeNA Co., Ltd. have officially announced a strategic AI-assisted animation partnership in Japan. This collaboration marks a significant step, with DeNA's Entertainment Development Business Unit set to integrate Utopai's innovative storytelling AI system, PAI, into its experimental animation workflows. The move underscores Japan's critical role as a global animation hub, a market that DeNA deeply understands regarding both its creators and audiences.

For Utopai Studios, this partnership in Japan is not just an important immediate step but also lays a robust foundation for what they anticipate will be a significantly growing relationship in the future.

PAI is not new to the regional and international animation landscape. The system is already actively deployed by Huace Film & TV in China, where it has been incorporated into their long-form content pipeline, notably for the animated series “Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years.” Beyond Asia, Utopai confirms that its tool is also being utilized in various film and television projects across the United States, as well as in complex international co-productions spanning the diverse markets of Europe, North America, and other parts of Asia, showcasing its versatility and global adoption.

Under the specific terms of the Japan arrangement, Utopai Studios will deploy a dedicated team of AI production specialists to work directly alongside DeNA’s creative and production staff. This integrated team will contribute to crucial early stages, including the development of visual concepts, character and environment design, meticulous scene planning, and the iterative production process that defines animation creation. Crucially, DeNA’s artists will retain complete authority over the core creative elements such as story narratives, distinct visual styles, character performances, and overall tone, with final sign-off power on every single creative decision, ensuring human artistic vision remains paramount.

Minabe Naoki, head of DeNA’s Entertainment Development Business Unit, highlighted the inherently demanding nature of animation production, which necessitates an exceptionally high degree of creativity, consistent execution, and meticulous attention to detail. Through this collaboration with Utopai Studios, DeNA aims to investigate how AI can foster an environment where creators are empowered to concentrate more profoundly on their artistic craft, simultaneously enhancing the efficiency of production workflows. This initiative is distinct from DeNA's other ongoing animation productions, positioning itself as a strategic venture to combine the strengths of both companies and pioneer new avenues for Japan's renowned anime industry to sustain and bolster its global competitiveness.

Its "agent-first" architecture ensures that once a character, background, or any design element receives approval, that asset can be seamlessly carried forward and applied to subsequent scenes without requiring repeated rebuilding. This comprehensive capability spans the entire production lifecycle, from initial visualization concepts through to final edits and efficient asset storage. In terms of intellectual property and security within the DeNA partnership, the use of all production materials and creative assets will be governed by jointly negotiated rules on permissions and IP protection.
