Hofstra's NCAA March Madness Dream Crushed by Alabama
After a quarter-century hiatus, Hofstra University's men's basketball team made their highly anticipated return to the NCAA Tournament, only to fall to No. 4 Alabama, 90-70, in a first-round game held at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida. This marked Hofstra's fifth appearance as a Division I program in the tournament, having previously qualified in 1976, 1977, 2000, and 2001. Their 2020 qualification was unfortunately cancelled due to the global pandemic.
The 13-seeded Pride, entering the contest on a seven-game winning streak that included three victories at the CAA Tournament, initially stunned the Crimson Tide. Midway through the first half, Hofstra mounted a decisive 16-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Joshua Aaron Reaves, giving them a significant 28-18 lead. However, Alabama quickly regained momentum, taking a narrow 37-35 advantage into halftime. Key performances for Hofstra included Preston Edmead with 24 points and Cruz Davis adding 14. Grad student German Plotnikov, playing his final game for Hofstra, contributed 12 points, while Alabama was led by Labaron Philon Jr. who scored 29. The Crimson Tide, with a record of 24-9, will advance to face No. 5 Texas Tech in the second round.
In the second half, Hofstra continued to battle, cutting Alabama’s lead to 67-62 after an Edmead three-pointer. They further closed the gap to 71-66 with just under five minutes remaining after a Cruz Davis layup, but could get no closer. Alabama ultimately sealed their victory with a dominant 19-4 run to close out the game.
Back on campus in Hempstead, a vibrant celebration unfolded as fans gathered for a watch party, marking the culmination of a 25-year wait. Waves of students, alumni, and staff, dressed in school colors, converged at the building on the corner of Republic and Liberty Boulevards. The atmosphere was electric, filled with the shared exhilaration of being recognized as one of the nation's 68 best men's college basketball teams. Jeff Mendelsohn, a 2007 alumnus from Woodbury, articulated the collective sentiment during halftime, expressing excitement about Turner Sports analyst Charles Barkley discussing Hofstra and head coach Speedy Claxton, emphasizing the
