Historic Win: Alexia Jayy Shatters Records as The Voice's First Black Woman Champion in 15 Years!

History was decisively made on the world stage this week as Alexia Jayy, a 31-year-old R&B singer hailing from Alabama, claimed the prestigious title of The Voice’s first Black woman champion. Her victory on April 14th shattered a long-standing barrier across the show’s entire 15-year history and twenty-nine seasons, marking a pivotal moment in competition television.
Alexia Jayy competed fiercely on Team Adam, ultimately securing coach Adam Levine his fourth career win. Her performance in the finale left no doubt about her deservingness, with powerful renditions of Patti LaBelle‘s iconic “Lady Marmalade” and Adele‘s moving “One and Only” bringing the coaching panel to their feet. Her immediate post-win success includes the release of her new single, “Rent Free,” which dropped instantly following her victory. This track was produced by Grammy winners Jack Splash and Jim Jonsin, renowned for their work with artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé. Alexia describes “Rent Free” as a powerful anthem about self-worth, encapsulating the sentiment that “Sometimes people don’t realise what they had until it’s gone, and by then you’ve already moved on.
