Half-Century Celebration: Hong Kong Film Festival Honors Legends!

The Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) is set to commemorate its 50th anniversary with a special retrospective program dedicated to celebrating Chinese-language cinema. This program, aptly titled “Revisiting Chinese Cinema: The Beginning of a New Journey,” will feature a selection of masterclasses and seminars led by some of the most influential filmmakers from the region.
The retrospective is designed to showcase 12 Chinese-language classics, highlighting key New Wave movements that originated in the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Esteemed filmmakers such as Chen Kaige, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Huang Jianxin, Tsai Ming-liang, and Ann Hui are confirmed to participate in the accompanying educational sessions, offering valuable insights into their craft and the evolution of Chinese cinema.
A significant portion of the selection spotlights the Fifth Generation of Chinese Mainland filmmakers, whose groundbreaking work was instrumental in bringing Chinese cinema to international acclaim through their distinctive symbolic and visually striking storytelling. Notable films representing this pivotal movement include Chen Kaige’s “Yellow Earth,” Zhang Yimou‘s “Red Sorghum,” Tian Zhuangzhuang’s “The Horse Thief,” and Huang Jianxin’s “The Black Cannon Incident.”
The Hong Kong New Wave will be represented by iconic films such as Tsui Hark‘s “The Butterfly Murders,” Ann Hui’s “The Secret,” Patrick Tam’s “The Sword,” and Allen Fong’s “Ah Ying.” Similarly, Taiwan’s New Cinema will be featured with the anthology “In Our Time,” directed by Tao Te-Chen, Edward Yang, Ko I-Chen, and Chang Yi, alongside Wan Jen’s “Ah Fei,” Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s “Dust in the Wind,” and Tsai Ming-Liang’s “Rebels of the Neon God.” HKIFF50 is scheduled to run from April 1 to April 12, with the complete program details expected to be unveiled on March 10.
In a separate development, Jio Platforms Limited has announced the appointment of Dan Bailey as its new president, with a primary mandate to spearhead the Indian tech giant’s international expansion initiatives. Bailey, a seasoned professional with over 35 years of experience spanning investment banking and consulting, brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.
Prior to joining Jio Platforms, Bailey most recently served as the chair of Deutsche Bank’s TMT (Technology, Media, and Telecom) practice. His extensive career also includes significant senior positions at prominent financial institutions such as Morgan Stanley, HSBC, and Schroders/Citi. Based in London, he will report directly to Akash Ambani, who serves as the chair of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, and will also join the Jio Platforms executive committee.
Akash Ambani acknowledged Bailey's long-standing relationship with the company, describing him as a “trusted advisor for many years.” This strategic appointment underscores Jio Platforms’ ambitious push to globalize its proprietary digital platforms, which were initially developed and optimized to serve a vast user base exceeding a billion individuals within India.
