Golden Globes Powerhouse: Horror Hit and Dark Comedy Soar on Streaming After Wins

While A24 closed 2025 on a high with the success of Marty Supreme, the year began with several theatrical disappointments. Among them was the dark comedy If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, written and directed by Mary Bronstein, wife of Marty Supreme co-writer Ronald Bronstein. The film struggled significantly at the box office, earning less than $1.5 million and becoming A24’s lowest-grossing theatrical release of the year. It even underperformed direct-to-digital titles such as Highest 2 Lowest, as well as lesser-seen releases like Opus and Sorry, Baby.
Released on October 10, 2025, with a runtime of 113 minutes, the film initially appeared destined to be forgotten. However, its fortunes shifted dramatically following awards season recognition.
Golden Globe Win Sparks Streaming Resurgence
The film experienced a major resurgence after Rose Byrne won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, defeating Cynthia Erivo, Chase Infiniti, EmmaStone, Amanda Seyfried, and Kate Hudson. Following her win, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You surged up the PVOD charts, jumping 12 spots on Apple TV’s domestic rankings to finish inside the top 10, according to FlixPatrol. In doing so, it surpassed high-profile titles such as Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, fellow awards contender Sentimental Value, and Gerard Butler’s Greenland. The chart was topped by Predator: Badlands.
Critically, the film has been widely praised for its propulsive energy, drawing comparisons to Uncut Gems, and for Conan O’Brien’s standout supporting performance. It holds a “Certified Fresh” 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics applauding its “fever-dream immersion into parental stress” and its ability to connect with “thunderous force.” Much of that acclaim centers on Byrne’s “gutsy star turn” and Bronstein’s “uncompromising vision.”
Before her Golden Globe victory, Byrne also claimed the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, firmly positioning her as a serious Oscar contender. Produced by Josh Safdie, Ronald Bronstein, Ryan Zacarias, Sara Murphy, and Eli Bush, the film follows Linda Delaney (Byrne), a millennial mother juggling the emotional weight of caring for her chronically ill daughter while navigating her career as a psychotherapist—made more exhausting by her physically absent husband’s constant, unwanted advice.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners Reinforces Horror’s Awards-Season Power
Elsewhere in the industry, Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller Sinners is challenging the long-standing tendency to overlook horror films during awards season. While classics like The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby broke through in earlier decades—and more recently Get Out and TheSubstance—Sinners continues that tradition with critical and awards success.
Released on April 18, 2025, with a runtime of 138 minutes, the film has already secured two wins from seven Golden Globe nominations and four victories from an impressive 17 nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards. It is now enjoying renewed popularity on streaming, ranking seventh on HBO Max’s global Top 10,according to FlixPatrol.
Set in 1932, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as brothers Smoke and Stack, a performance widely regarded as one of the finest of his career. The pair return from Chicago to their hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi, to open a juke joint in an old sawmill, hoping to create a safe haven for their community. Their opening night is soon threatened by a sinister force intent on infiltrating the building and terrorizing those inside.
Supported by a strong ensemble cast—including Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo—the film is praised as a masterclass in storytelling, blending powerful performances, a sharp script, and evocative musical composition into a gripping emotional experience.
Looking ahead, Michael B. Jordan remains busy with upcoming projects, including voicing a role in Netflix’s animated action-comedy Swapped, directed by Nathan Greno, and starring in and directing the heist reboot The Thomas Crown Affair, alongside Adria Arjona, Lily Gladstone, Kenneth Branagh, and Danai Gurira.
