God of War Unleashed! Dave Bautista Tapped as Kratos in Epic TV Series
Dave Bautista is officially set to star as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's "God of War" series, replacing Ryan Hurst due to injury. The show will adapt the latest game narratives, focusing on Kratos and Atreus's journey through the Norse realms. Filming is expected to resume soon, with a robust cast and production team in place.
Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's highly anticipated television series adaptation of the renowned video game franchise, "God of War." This announcement follows earlier reports that Bautista was in discussions for the role, stepping in after Ryan Hurst, originally slated to play Kratos and announced in January 2026, suffered a torn bicep. Hurst's injury required surgery, which would have delayed production into 2027, prompting Amazon and Sony, co-producing partners, to recast the pivotal role.
Prime Video has demonstrated its confidence in the series by granting a two-season order, with both seasons scheduled to film back-to-back. Production for the series initially commenced in Vancouver in February. With Bautista now confirmed as Kratos, filming is expected to resume in the coming weeks. Consequently, all scenes previously shot with Hurst will need to be reshot to accommodate the new casting.
Industry sources suggest that few actors are as well-suited for the demanding role of Kratos as Bautista. Beyond his established acting career, Bautista possesses the unique advantage of being one of the few individuals in Hollywood capable of stepping into such a physically rigorous role on short notice. Kratos is famously depicted with an incredibly muscular physique in the games, a standard Bautista has consistently maintained throughout his career, negating the need for extensive months of physical preparation. He is represented by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
The series is set to adapt the narrative of the two most recent "God of War" games. The story will center on Kratos as he endeavors to raise his ten-year-old son, Atreus, amidst epic battles against the gods of the Norse pantheon. According to the official logline, "Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human."
The cast for the series includes Callum Vinson, who remains attached to his role as Kratos’ son Atreus. Additional confirmed cast members are Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka portraying the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
The production team features Ronald D. Moore serving as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye is slated to direct the first two episodes of the series. Maril Davis of Tall Ship also holds an executive producer credit, alongside Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis are on board as co-executive producers. The "God of War" series is a collaborative co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
