Global Cinema Shines: 'Omaha', 'Nino', and 'Sentimental Value' Dominate Jakarta World Festival

The fourth edition of the Jakarta World Cinema (JWC) festival concluded with a closing ceremony held at CGV Grand Indonesia, where the winners of both its feature and short film competitions were announced. The JWC Audience Award, determined by direct votes from festivalgoers, was presented to Joachim Trier’s film “Sentimental Value.”
In the feature Competition, the esteemed jury honored Pauline Loquès with the Best Director award for her work on “Nino,” while Cole Webley’s film “Omaha” was recognized as the Best Film. The KlikFilm Short Movie Competition, designed to celebrate emerging Indonesian talent, bestowed four distinct prizes. Sinung Winahyoko’s “Babon” secured first place, earning a valuable feature film fund. Joni Astin Ariadi’s “Darma” was awarded first runner-up, also receiving a feature film fund, and Ardian Parasto’s “Pembayun” placed as second runner-up, similarly granted a feature film fund. The Audience Favorite Award in this category went to Nada Leo Prakasa’s “Wahyu,” which also came with a cash prize of IDR50 million (approximately $3,000).
This year’s festival was a significant event, showcasing 185 films sourced from 66 different countries. It successfully drew a substantial audience of 208,111 attendees, who participated through a combination of online screenings and in-person cinema experiences across Jakarta.
Indonesia’s Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, attended the closing ceremony and underscored the festival's importance, stating, “Jakarta World Cinema is a very important event for the Indonesian film ecosystem, where it becomes a space for discussion and a celebration of cinema. Our film industry is something we must nurture, and so far its development has been very positive.” He further expressed his satisfaction, adding, “Through JWC, we are also very pleased to see that several young filmmakers now have the opportunity to make their first feature films funded by KlikFilm. We hope there will be more platforms like this.”
Executive director Frederica characterized this edition as “a turning point for us,” highlighting the overwhelmingly positive audience response. She voiced particular pride in “providing opportunities for young Indonesian filmmakers to transition from shorts to feature films.” Festival director Shandy Gasella echoed these sentiments, noting, “The audience response to JWC 2025 has been extraordinary. From sold-out screenings to the excitement around the short film competition, this shows that spaces for appreciating both world and local cinema are growing.”
The Jakarta World Cinema festival, founded in 2022, is powered by KlikFilm and receives support from CGV Cinemas, enabling its continued success in promoting global and local cinematic arts.
