Global Alarm: Britain Evacuates Staff Amid Looming US Military Action Threat Against Iran

The prospect of a major US intervention in Iran, potentially the largest since the Iraq war, is fraught with contradictions stemming from President Donald Trump's allegations and intelligence assessments. In a recent State of the Union address, Trump claimed Iran posed a direct threat to the US, asserting that the country was actively developing missiles capable of reaching American shores. However, this claim has not been substantiated by the White House or the Pentagon, with US intelligence reports from the previous year indicating that Iran would require a decade to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the US. A public assessment from the US Defense Intelligence Agency in 2025 further suggested that Iran might develop a militarily viable ICBM by 2035 using its space-launch vehicles, should it choose to pursue such a capability. Nevertheless, this potential threat to the US homeland is considered minor when compared to existing dangers posed by nations like Russia, China, and North Korea. Furthermore, a separate annual threat assessment by the US intelligence community in March made no mention of any direct military threat to the US homeland from Iran’s ballistic missile program.
Amid these discrepancies, top advisers have sought to reconcile Trump's statements without directly contradicting the president. Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State and National Security Adviser, acknowledged Iran's efforts to achieve ICBM capabilities, citing their attempts to launch satellites into space and the increasing range of their current missiles, suggesting a pathway towards developing weapons that could reach the continental US. Iran, however, has consistently deemed its ballistic missile program a “red line” in any negotiations, with the Iranian foreign minister dismissing Trump's assertions about Iran's missile and nuclear programs as “big lies.” These contentious claims also include remarks from Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, who stated Iran was
