Ghostly Glamour: Own a Piece of Haunted Scottish History with Clifftop Castle for Sale

Perched dramatically on a Scottish cliff-top, the historic Dunskey Castle, believed by many to be haunted, is currently listed for sale with offers over £100,000 being considered. This stunning mid-16th century scheduled monument occupies a breathtaking location, encompassing eight acres of land and offering panoramic views that, on a clear day, stretch across the sea to Northern Ireland, over 20 miles away.
The current ruins of Dunskey Castle stand on the site of what is thought to have been the earlier Adair Castle, which was destroyed around 1500. The magnificent towerhouse, a key defensive structure, was constructed in the mid-16th century for the Adairs of Kinhilt, a family also associated with the Castle of St John in Stranraer. A long wing to the north was subsequently added in the 1620s. However, by approximately 1700, the entire building had fallen into a state of dereliction.

Despite its ruined condition, enough of Dunskey Castle remains to powerfully convey the strength of its original fortifications. The walls are an impressive 5ft thick, and the central tower rises to a height of 30 metres. Remnants of a vaulted cellar and a watchtower are still visible, all strategically situated on the very edge of the cliff. Access to the castle is facilitated by the coastal footpath at the rear of the property, and it remains a popular destination for tourists eager to explore its historical grandeur across the former moat.
The castle is nestled in a secluded spot on the coastal path connecting Portpatrick to Morroch, an aspect that significantly enhances its intrinsic sense of mystery and historic charm. The sale of this remarkable property is being managed by Ian Ely-Corbett of Strutt and Parker, inviting offers starting from £100,000 for this unique piece of Scottish heritage.
Adding to its allure are the numerous online accounts and local legends claiming the fortress is haunted. One of the most enduring tales recounts a wandering musician, a minstrel, who was locked away in the castle's dungeons. According to the story, he discovered a hidden passageway leading to a cave on the shore below the castle. Although he could hear the roaring waves and see the moon, promising freedom, he was unable to scale the slick, steep walls and tragically died a slow death within sight of his escape.

Legend has it that on wild, tempestuous evenings, the ghostly sound of his bagpipes can still be heard echoing over the crashing waves. Another tale suggests that the castle is haunted by a Brownie, often depicted as a hairy humanoid apparition by supernatural enthusiasts, with some accounts on platforms like Tumblr reporting 'unexplainable noises' emanating from the site.
