Ghana's Health Minister Promises Swift Completion of La General Hospital Project, Gov't Pledges GH₵130 Million

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to the completion of the long-delayed La General Hospital project. He described the facility as crucial for alleviating pressure on Ridge Hospital and other key health facilities within Accra, including Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. This commitment comes as the government has allocated GH₵130 million in the national budget for the project, with the Ministry of Finance actively expediting the disbursement process to ensure uninterrupted progress on site.
During a recent inspection tour of the project site at La, Mr. Akandoh engaged directly with the contractors, receiving a detailed briefing on the current state of work and the challenges that have hampered its advancement. He conveyed a strong message of assurance, stating, "This project is very dear to our hearts. We have made the necessary allocations, and I have personally followed up with the Ministry of Finance to ensure that payments are processed quickly. Please remain on site and continue your work, the government will do its part." He further urged open communication, stressing that any emerging issues would be promptly addressed, and affirmed his ministry's resolve to maintain close supervision for timely completion and accountability.
The redevelopment of the La General Hospital began after its demolition in 2020 under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, with plans for a modern 170-bed facility. However, construction soon came to a halt due to significant funding and contractual complications. This prolonged delay has garnered considerable criticism from local residents and healthcare workers, who have lamented the absence of essential medical services that the hospital previously provided.
Accompanying the Minister, the Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, expressed profound gratitude to the government for prioritizing the project. She reassured constituents that the hospital remains a central focus of the current administration, stating, "We want to assure the people of La Dadekotopon that this hospital will be completed. Government has not abandoned it; we are committed to seeing it through." Once completed, the redeveloped La General Hospital is poised to significantly enhance access to quality healthcare services for the communities of La and its surrounding areas, simultaneously contributing to the much-needed decongestion of major referral centers in the capital.
