Ghana Mourns: Ayawaso East MP Naser Toure Mahama's Untimely Demise Leaves Parliament in Pain

Naser Toure Mahama, the esteemed Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency and a prominent figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, marking a deeply painful and shocking loss for the Majority caucus and the entire Parliament. His death came as a profound sorrow, particularly at the beginning of the 2026 parliamentary year, leaving colleagues and sympathizers in mourning.
Born in Nima, Accra, on March 17, 1965, Mr. Toure's parliamentary journey began in 2013 after his victory in the 2012 general elections. He diligently served four terms as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, demonstrating unwavering commitment to parliamentary work and constituency development. During his tenure, he held significant positions, including Vice Chairman of the pivotal Energy Committee. He also contributed actively as a member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee, playing an active role in legislative processes.
Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, highlighting Mr. Toure's remarkable character and amiable disposition. Richard Acheampong, the Second Deputy Majority Whip and MP for Bia East, who served alongside Mr. Toure for four terms, described him as a man of calm demeanour, deep humility, and profound respect for others, noting that "everybody liked him" and that "he could not even kill a fly." Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, the First Deputy Majority Whip, echoed these sentiments, remembering him as one of the most honest lawmakers she had worked with, expressing devastation at the loss and acknowledging his collaborative spirit within Parliament.
Reflecting on the unexpected nature of his passing, Mr. Acheampong shared a poignant memory of their last private interaction, where Mr. Toure, a caucus chairperson, discussed caucus issues, unaware it would be their final conversation. From a religious perspective, Mr. Acheampong noted the acceptance of Allah's will, while also emphasizing the need for collective prayer for his forgiveness and for the well-being of those who remain. Kennedy Nyarko Osei, the Akim Swedru lawmaker, also offered his tribute, describing the late MP as a "gentle soul," a sentiment that encapsulated the widespread respect Naser Toure Mahama garnered.
The final funeral rites and burial for Naser Toure Mahama are scheduled to take place on Monday, January 5, the day following his death. Yussif Jajah, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso North, announced that the body had been secured through the intervention of President John Dramani Mahama, fast-tracking the necessary processes. In accordance with Islamic customs, a Janazah prayer will be observed at exactly 10:00 am at his constituency office along the Kanda Highway in Nima–Kanda. This prayer session will be led by His Eminence, the National Chief Imam, marking the first phase of the burial programme. Following the prayers, the body will be conveyed to the Madina Cemetery, where Naser Toure Mahama will be laid to rest.
