German Film Icons Unite to Unleash Five Radical Dogma Films!

The Dogma 25 film movement, which advocates for "free and unpredictable cinema," is actively expanding its reach, notably with the recent establishment of a German chapter. This development comes exactly one year after the movement's initial launch at Cannes with five Danish directors. The new German group, comprising esteemed filmmakers such as Tom Tykwer, Kurdwin Ayub, İlker Çatak, Nora Fingscheidt, and Helene Hegemann, has committed to creating five independent films under the Dogma 25 principles, aiming to provide a counterpoint to the current structural challenges facing the cinema industry.
Organizers emphasize that this new chapter emerges at a crucial time, as film productions grow more expensive, financing becomes increasingly fragmented and complex, and global studios prioritize commercial safety over artistic innovation. Dogma 25 offers a platform where filmmakers can freely express themselves, unburdened by calculated expectations. Following the model set by the Danish originators—May el-Toukhy, Milad Alami, Annika Berg, Isabella Eklöf, and Jesper Just—the German initiative plans to secure base financing for all five projects.
Key partners are already on board for the German Dogma 25 films. X Verleih will serve as the German-language distributor, while TrustNordisk will handle international sales. ZDF and Arte are slated to be broadcasting partners, and the MOIN Film Fund has been confirmed as the first regional funding body. The German Dogma movement is structured as a co-production between X Filme Creative Pool and Zentropa Germany. Production is managed by Jorgo Narjes, Uwe Schott, and Tom Tykwer for X Filme, and Solmaz Azizi, Louise Vesth, and Tine Mikkelsen for Zentropa Germany. İlker Çatak’s feature film specifically is overseen by producer Ingo Fliess, a co-production of if…Productions, X Filme, and Zentropa Germany.
Further bolstering the movement’s profile, Netflix recently confirmed its involvement in the five initial Dogma 25 films from the Nordic region. This deal, signed with Zentropa, dictates that the U.S. streamer will release these Dogma 25 titles in the Nordics after their local theatrical run, facilitated by Nordisk Film Distribution, followed by airing on the Danish public broadcaster DR. Zentropa co-managing director Louise Vesth clarified that the window between cinematic release and Netflix showcase will adhere to the traditional six-to-eight month period prevalent in Denmark for theatrical and SVOD content, aligning with their existing film agreements.
Vesth expressed enthusiasm for this collaboration, noting it as Netflix’s first pre-buy with Zentropa. She highlighted the strategic importance of building the Dogma 25 as an "artistic and auteur-driven brand." Vesth believes that in a landscape where traditional Hollywood branding might be diminishing, Europe has an opportunity to excel in brand building for artistic films. This branding effort, she asserted, is crucial for helping filmmakers and artistic projects gain strong ground and visibility.
One of the eagerly anticipated Nordic Dogma 25 titles is Isabella Eklöf’s BDSM love story, “Mr Nawashi,” starring Esben Smed and newcomer Tanya Holm Andersen. Inspired by Eklöf’s personal experiences, the film tells the story of Katarina, a talented but undisciplined singer who finds mental and physical flourishing through an online BDSM relationship with the enigmatic Mr. Nawashi. However, their mutual attraction soon devolves into obsession and dependency. Eklöf described her real-life experience as a consensual yet dangerous game, thrilling due to the close link between fear and excitement, and emphasized her intense dedication to authentic storytelling, making the filming process incredibly high-pressure due to the creative constraints and personal nature of the narrative.
Filming for “Mr Nawashi” is currently underway, with delivery anticipated in 2027. Following suit, films by Annika Berg and Jesper Just are also slated for completion in the same year. May el-Toukhy and Milad Alami are expected to commence their projects later this year or in early 2027, after concluding their existing commitments. All Dogme 25 films, both currently in production and planned, are handled internationally by TrustNordisk, underscoring a unified approach to global distribution for this evolving movement.
